2002 Environmental Surveillance report now available

The Laboratory's 2002 annual Environmental Surveillance Report has been released. "Environmental Surveillance at Los Alamos during 2002," describes the results of the monitoring program for Lab and local community air and water quality, soils and foodstuffs, said Lars Soholt of Meteorology and Air Quality (RRES-MAQ).

"It acknowledges our compliance with environmental regulations and gives Laboratory managers and the general public a snapshot in time of the actual impacts of Laboratory operations in 2002," Soholt said.

The Lab's environmental surveillance program staff takes samples from about 450 different locations within a 50-mile radius of the Lab. From these locations, more than 12,000 environmental samples are collected every year and 250,000 analyses for radiochemicals and nonradiochemicals are completed.

"The publication is widely read and serves a useful public information purpose," said Soholt. "We know that many of our neighbors and others who are interested in the Lab closely examine this report."

The LANL 2002 Environmental Surveillance Report is available at http://www.airquality.lanl.gov/pdf/ESR/LA-14085-ENV.pdf online. (Adobe Acrobat Reader required)

Supplemental data supporting the report is at http://www.airquality.lanl.gov/ESRIndex.htm online.

For more information, contact Soholt at 7-2256 or write to soholt@lanl.gov by electronic mail.
