The Los Alamos chapter of the American Society for Metals is observing National Engineering Week with an evening of science and engineering demonstrations Feb. 23 at Los Alamos High School. The event is from 5 to 7 p.m., in the school cafeteria and is open to kindergarten through 12th grade students. There will be interactive, table top demonstrations relating to materials science, metallurgy, engineering and technology. Food and beverages will be served. The event is cosponsored by the Community Relations (CRO) Office, the Materials Technology program at University of New Mexico, Los Alamos and Sangre de Cristo Girl Scout Troop 123. Pacific Nanotechnology is hosting a free seminar presenting the Nano-Rú Atomic Force Microscope and its applications to nanotechnology. Updated 2/12/04 Women's working group networking lunch is Feb. 17 The Laboratory's Women's Diversity Working Group is hosting a networking lunch at 11:30 a.m., Feb. 17 in the Otowi Building cafeteria at Technical Area 3. The meeting is open to all Laboratory workers who are interested in women's issues. The networking lunch will allow non-members to get acquainted with working group members and the issues the working group is working on. Consistent with the Laboratory's goal of developing a more agile workforce, WDWG interests for the 2004 fiscal year include, childcare initiatives and maternity benefits; access to private space for health-related needs; improving networking and mentoring opportunities; and improving the current conflict resolution process. The group also will discuss potential Women's History Month activities in March for the Laboratory. "The WDWG is asking the Laboratory's women to help it decide what issues the working group should address in the next year. This is an opportunity for the women at the Laboratory to influence where the WDWG directs its resources and efforts," said Lisa Gutierrez, Diversity (DVO) Office director. Updated 2/11/04 Volunteer opportunity The Santa Fe Children's Museum currently has openings in their museum shop and admissions desk. The shop sells museum quality educational materials and toys. They are looking for someone who has retail experience and enjoys interacting with families and children. The openings are between 12:30 and 5 p.m., two to three hour shifts on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. The class will instruct participants on new skills geared toward competitive climbing. The class meets from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Wednesdays and Friday at the Los Alamos Family YMCA. The class costs $80 for YMCA members, $115 for nonmembers and registration ends Feb. 27. The Los Alamos Family YMCA is located at 1450 Iris St., downtown. Updated 2/11/04 HSR-8 training on new online mapping system Operational and Facility IH&S Support (HSR-8) will be conducting a two day training session to introduce the new electronic online mapping system that will be required and used in conjunction with the Excavation/Soil Disturbance Permit Review Request. The training is scheduled from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Feb. 17 and 18 at the Louis B. Rosen Auditorium located at Technical Area 53, Building 1. Updated 2/10/04 Master Gardener classes forming NMSU's Cooperative Extension Service is currently enrolling students for the Master Gardener, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, class which will begin on Feb. 24. The class is from 2 to 5 p.m., Tuesday's, through mid-May. Topics include: Water Efficient Landscaping, Gardening in the Wildland Interface, Soils, Integrated Pest Management, Backyard Fruit and Vegetable Gardening, Weeds, Turf and several other topics. The 45 hour course of instruction is designed to train individuals as Master Gardener volunteers. There are two payment options depending on volunteer commitment. Updated 2/10/04 Los Alamos community blood drive is this week United Blood Services and the Los Alamos Civitans Club, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is hosting a community blood drive beginning Monday through Friday in the Parish Hall of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3700 Canyon Road. Blood donations can be given from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., today. Employees who volunteer without comnpensation as blood donors during Laboratory-approved blood drives are excused from work with pay for the time necessary to accomplish this purpose. Time off for the blood donation must not exceed four hours. For accounting purposes, absences for blood donation are reported in quarter-hour increments for nonexempt employees and one-hour increments for exempt employees. The code for blood donatin is "BD." The class consists of four, two-hour lessons on proper frame, dance floor etiquette and leading and following techniques. Mike Lazarus of the Swing and Country Western Dance Studio will lead the course. The class meets from 7 to 9 p.m. on consecutive Fridays. The cost is $35 for YMCA members, $45 for nonmembers. Updated 2/5/04 Information and Records Management (IM-5) classes Basic Records and Information Management Class, Course # 22477, Session 27 - In response to the issuance of LIR-308-00-02.0, Laboratory Records Management, Information and Records Management (IM-5) is offering a half day course on Basic Records and Information Management from 1 to 4:30 p.m., Feb. 25. The course will be held at Canyon School, Room 165. Other course dates will be scheduled as needed. This course will be presented in four short modules: Overview of Records Management and What is a Record; Records Management Drivers; What Are Retention Schedules; and Records Disposition -- Transfer and Destruction. The course will provide interested employees with the basic tools needed to continue to implement this LIR and to answer questions regarding its requirements. Two sessions for Point of Contacts (POCs) have been scheduled for Feb. 18 at Canyon School, Room 165. These sessions are for those POCs who have not taken the prior POC training. The mandatory training (No. 24182, Session 20) will be held from 1 to 2:45 p.m. This session concentrates on the POC responsibilities as listed in LIR 308-00-02.0, Laboratory Records Management, and is a mandatory requirement for all POCs. The Expanded POC Training (No. 24212, Session 12) will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. This session will expand into some records management topics and is not mandatory. There is no cost for these sessions and registration can be done through Virtual Training on the Lab's home page. The sessions will provide interested employees with the basic tools needed to continue to implement this LIR and answers to questions regarding its requirements. Los Alamos Photographers have put together another wonderful show of local talent at the Mesa Public Library Art Gallery. The show, which is open to Los Alamos photographers of all skill levels, promotes appreciation of photography and encourages novices to professionals to exhibit their work. The exhibit includes any photographic process that results in prints suitable for hanging-digital images printed with ink jet, traditional photographs printed with platinum-palladium and more. Entry to the show was not competitive and no awards are given. Approximately 100 pieces will be on display for the month of February. The show will run from Feb. 5 - 28 during regular library hours. The institute is accepting applications for work in all laboratory areas; however, the primary thrusts are in f-element science, nuclear and radiochemistry, high explosives chemistry, surface science, spectroscopy, analytical chemistry and materials science. Updated 1/27/04 Deadline for Dog Jog logo contest is Feb. 20 The Dog Jog committee, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is calling on all creative young artists to put their imaginations and love of dogs to work by submitting a drawing for the 2004 Dog Jog Logo Contest. The contest is open to youngsters aged 8-11 whose family lives or works in Los Alamos County. The winning design will be used as the official 2004 Los Alamos Dog Jog logo and will be placed on event t-shirts and other official event materials. The Logo Contest winner also will receive one free t-shirt. Updated 1/8/04 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.
