Tuesday, January 27, 2004 Tell Pete discusses catastrophic leave policyThe newest issues briefing on the "Tell Pete" Web page is now online. This issues briefing raised through the "Tell Pete" electronic mail venue is on Los Alamos' new catastrophic leave policy. Under the new Catastrophic Paid Leave Program, Lab employees can contribute vacation time -- in eight-hour increments -- to provide some supplemental paid leave to co-workers who are without enough combined vacation and sick time to cover a severe illness or injury. Contained in AM 315 of the Administrative Manual, the policy applies to employees
out of work continually for at least four weeks and who, after using up all
their sick and vacation time, would otherwise have to take unpaid leave. The
program also requires a doctor's verification of the seriousness of the medical
issue and the need for the employee to be out for the minimum period whether
for themselves or a family member. "Tell Pete" began in February 2003 as an anonymous way to submit suggestions and identify concerns of Laboratory employees as well as help Laboratory Director G. Peter Nanos gain awareness of employee issues. More information about how "Tell Pete" works can be found at http://int.lanl.gov/communications/tell_pete.shtml online.
