Volunteers with backgrounds in astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics,
mathematics, earth science and general science are needed to serve as
scientific judges, moderators and rules judges. General volunteers also
are also needed to assist with a variety of duties, e.g. score keepers,
timers,
runners, etc. The NASB is sponsored by The Institute for Sustainable
Development. Each year, Native American High School students from throughout
the country
are invited and participate in a science competition. The winners go
on to compete with teams from over 60 other regional competitions at
the Department of Energy's National Science Bowl, held in Washington,
DC April 29 - May 3. Detailed information on the competition rules and
responsibilities can be found at the National Science Bowl Web site at 4. The Santa Clara Pueblo Community Library is looking for volunteers tutors to help in their tutoring program from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Community Library. The program is designed to help the children of the community in various subjects they are having difficulty in. The students are in grades K-12. Volunteer tutors are needed to help a 10th grade student in geometry, 6th grader in Math (decimals, multiplication, etc.) and possibly a 7th grader in English. Five new book discussion group kits will be available to check out in early February from White Rock Branch and Mesa Public Library. Each kit contains 10 paperback copies of the same book, discussion questions and information about the author. The kits will check out to one person in the group for one month. Available titles include The Little Friend by Donna Tartt, Atonement by Ian McEwan, Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd and Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. Others titles will be added based on input and requests from patrons and book discussion groups. Also included in each kit are tips on where people can go for information on how to start a book group and some helpful places they can go to choose their next read, starting, of course, at your local library’s reference desk or on the library Website at http://library.lac-nm.us online. (Adobe Acrobat Reader required) Updated 1/21/04 Sachs discusses extreme poverty at SFI lecture today The connection between rich and poor countries and reasons for a widening income gap is the subject of the next Santa Fe Institute lecture for the nonscientist today in Santa Fe. Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, will speak at 7:30 this evening in the James A. Little Theater at New Mexico School for the Deaf. The talk is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. According to Sachs, in a global economy, rich countries continue to achieve economic growth while poor countries remain trapped in poverty. It is a puzzling conundrum for economists and others because rich and poor countries are usually connected economically through trade, international production and finance. His talk will explore this phenomenon and the highly nonlinear interaction involving physical geography, demography and economic organization. The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.
