Regents meeting this week in San FranciscoUniversity of California regents are meeting Thursday and Friday at the UC, San Francisco Laurel Heights campus. Among the items the regents are scheduled to discuss on Thursday deals with the regents' committee on oversight of the Department of Energy laboratories. The regents will discuss and approve actions necessary to preserve the option of the university to continue managing Los Alamos, Lawrence Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories. This is not an authorization to actually compete, a decision which will be made later; instead, this action recognizes that UC will have to take certain actions to be positioned to compete. UC's position remains that it is planning as if it will compete but that the regents will make the ultimate decision, based on the terms and conditions of the competition. Other items on the agenda include a report and discussion of the governor's budget proposal, along with a report on faculty recruitment and retention issues facing the university. To see an agenda for the meeting, go to http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/regents/regmeet/jan04.html online. The Web page also has an audio link to listen to the open sessions of the meeting.
