Lab employee, daughter in Highlights ad

It's a little hard to get excited about Christmas, snowflakes and candy canes in the middle of August. But that's what Leslie Maestas and daughter Marlie had to do when they were the "talent" for a Highlights for Children magazine advertising campaign.

Maestas of Infrastructure, Facilities and Construction (IFC) learned about the advertising campaign when her 6-year-old daughter brought home a note from school. The magazine was looking for a mother and child, the note said. Maestas called a telephone number, she said, and after some preliminary discussions and a visit to the Maestas home by a Highlights photographer, they eventually were picked for the advertisement.

"There were a large number of mothers and daughters trying out," said Maestas. After the magazine selected Maestas and her daughter, the photo shoot took place in August. "August 15 my daughter and I spent the morning in Santa Fe in winter clothes and sweaters - very hot for August - getting pictures taken with fake snow falling," Maestas said. "Actually, it was incredibly cool."
