Volunteer opportunities

The Salvation Army of Santa Fe needs volunteers to do "Angel Tree Sitting" - annually the Salvation Army has an Angel Tag Tree at the DeVargas Mall in Santa Fe. Shoppers can stop by and select an Angel Tag for a child or a senior. The Laboratory also is a partner in the Angel Tag Program and has Angel Tags throughout the Laboratory. Volunteers are needed now through Dec. 14 to assist with signing out Angel Tags at DeVargas Mall. If interested, contact Captain Jill Steiner at 988-8054.

The Salvation Army also needs "Bell Ringers" to assist with the 'kettle' program. To volunteer, contact Captain Bob Steiner at 988-8054.

Ornaments and decorations collection - After the Cerro Grande Fire, Los Alamos residents were blessed with an outpouring of good will from across the country. Part of that blessing was the collection and distribution of Christmas ornaments and holiday decorations to survivors of the fire. In light of the recent fires in southern California, the Los Alamos Girl Scouts, Brownies, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts are working together to collect ornaments and decorations. These will then be sent to the San Diego Boy Scout Council, who will accept and distribute these ornaments and decorations to fire survivors. Los Alamos Boy Scout Troop 22 is coordinating the effort and will be placing collection boxes around town (White Rock and Los Alamos Smiths grocery stores, Los Alamos National Bank Customer Service Area, and CB Fox). A collection booth also will be outside the CB Fox Department Store during the upcoming Los Alamos Christmas Light Parade on Dec. 6. If interested in contributing to this effort, bring a new or used ornament to one of the collection points. For more information, contact Ruth Ann Neal at 662-5632.

EPA accepting nominations for Green Chemistry Award

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is accepting nominations for the 2004 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards. The Presidential rank awards recognize innovative chemical technologies that incorporate green chemistry into chemical design, manufacture and use. Green chemistry is the use of chemistry to prevent pollution. Nominated technologies should reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances from a chemical product or process. Any individual, group or organization, both nonprofit and for profit, including academia, government and industry, may nominate a green chemistry technology for these awards. Self-nominations are welcome and expected.

Typically, five awards are given each year: one to an academic researcher, one to a small business, and the rest in specific areas of green chemistry. A nominated technology must have reached a significant milestone within the past five years in the United States. Nominations must be postmarked by Dec. 31 to be eligible for the 2004 awards, which will be presented at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC on June 28, 2004.

For more information, go to http://www.epa.gov/greenchemistry/howto.html online or contact Richard Engler of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at 202-564-8740 or write to engler.richard@epa.gov by electronic mail.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
