Columbia shuttle disaster revisited in Director's Colloquium today

On Feb. 1, Space Shuttle Columbia exploded upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere killing all seven astronauts on board.

G. Scott Hubbard, director of NASA's Ames Research Center, was the sole NASA official on the Columbia Accident Investigation Board. Hubbard will address the causes of the accident at a Director's Colloquium at 1:10 this afternoon in the Administration Building Auditorium at Technical Area 3. The talk is open to all Laboratory badgeholders.

The title of Hubbard's talk is "The Columbia Accident Investigation: Causes and Contributors in a High-Risk Environment." The talk will review both the physical and organizational causes of the accident with particular insight into the process of investigation that led to the board's physical cause statement. The evidence gathered during the investigation and the process through which the board reached its conclusions will be explained. The talk also will summarize the board's findings and recommendations for resuming Space Shuttle flight and operating safely in the future.

The colloquium will be broadcast on Labnet Channel 9 and can be accessed via the Internet using Real Media Player and IPTV technology.
