New members sought for Group Leader Action Council

The Laboratory's Group Leader Action Council is seeking new members to replace group leaders who are rotating off the council.

Half the membership must be replaced by new members every six months, according to its charter, said Geoff Reeves of Space and Atmospheric Sciences (ISR-1), GLAC chairman. "We are looking for group leaders who are willing to roll up their sleeves and help us get creative and find new solutions for some of the issues that make the group leader jobs so difficult to do," said Reeves.

The GLAC was formed as a result of the Director's Performance Improvement Program. The GLAC is designed as a recommending body to research issues and develop solutions and recommendations that improve the performance of the Laboratory, particularly at the group level and as a sounding board to represent group-leader opinion on issues and recommendations developed by other Lab organizations.

John Immele, deputy director for national security, is champion for the GLAC and has been supportive in raising proposals to the Senior Executive Team. Immele has said he strongly believes that the GLAC will have an opportunity to make a difference at the Lab. "The GLAC has made a significant difference in proposing and implementing the assistant group leader positions to help make the group leader job more doable, in proposing a central Lab Policy Office, and in working with the Human Resources (HR) Division to design the work force flexibility and redeployment programs to help the line transition people between programs," said Immele. He added that the contribution group leaders make to the institution by joining the GLAC will pay off in improved processes.

The GLAC is soliciting participants through nomination or self-nomination. Group leaders interested in self-nominating should send the following information to Harry Thomas of Training and Development (HR-TD) at hthomas@lanl.gov by electronic mail;

  1. Name
  2. Contact information including electronic mail address
  3. Group
  4. Years of experience as a group leader
  5. A brief description of reasons for wanting to serve on the GLAC
  6. A brief description of issues you would be interested in working on.

Lab employees who want to nominate other group leaders should submit the first four questions regarding the individual to Thomas by electronic mail. A member of the council will contact the individual nominated to ascertain their interest in serving.

Nominations should be sent to Thomas by Dec. 23.

Reeves said group leaders selected to serve on the council will be notified in January 2004. Immele will make the selections based on recommendations from the current GLAC, which reviews all nominations.
