Healthy Start: Before and During Pregnancy - This two-session class is geared toward women and couples planning a pregnancy, or women in the early months of pregnancy. Topics include nutrition, safe and fun exercise, physical and emotional adjustments, etc. Taught by HSR-2 staff: Wellness Center, Employee Assistance and Occupational Medicine. This month’s 1952 film is an ‘explosive’ thriller … Nuclear physicist Gene Barry lives and works in Los Alamos. Terrorists kidnap Barry's son and demand that the physicist turn over the H-bomb formula. It's cat-and-mouse for a while, but when the FBI gets on the case, the criminals don’t have a chance. Updated 11/5/03 EPA accepting nominations for Green Chemistry Award The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is accepting nominations for the 2004 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards. The Presidential rank awards recognize innovative chemical technologies that incorporate green chemistry into chemical design, manufacture and use. Green chemistry is the use of chemistry to prevent pollution. Nominated technologies should reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances from a chemical product or process. Any individual, group or organization, both nonprofit and for profit, including academia, government and industry, may nominate a green chemistry technology for these awards. Self-nominations are welcome and expected. Typically, five awards are given each year: one to an academic researcher, one to a small business, and the rest in specific areas of green chemistry. A nominated technology must have reached a significant milestone within the past five years in the United States. Nominations must be postmarked by Dec. 31 to be eligible for the 2004 awards, which will be presented at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC on June 28, 2004. San Ildefonso Pueblo needs volunteer tutors for one elementary school student and two high school students in math. Tutoring times are 3:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday's and Thursday's at the Pueblo gym. The purpose of the After-School Learning Program is to improve K-12th
grade students' fundamentals in math, reading, writing as well

Updated 11/19/03 Ice skating classes begin Dec. 1 at Family YMCA The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is registering youths for ice-skating classes. The classes are for children in grades one through six. Classes are held from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Monday and Wednesday at the Los Alamos Ice Rink on West Road. The first session begins Dec. 1. A second session begins Jan. 5, 2004. The class is limited to the first 20 participants and costs $35 for YMCA members; $42 for nonmembers. Updated 10/22/03 Second LANL Quantum Workshop on Dec. 16 and 17 The Quantum Institute Steering Committee is sponsoring a Laboratory-wide workshop on Quantum Information, Science and Technology on Dec. 16 and 17 in the Quantum Institute Briefing Center (TA-3, SM-40, Room N101). The purpose of the workshop is to update all those interested in quantum research at the Laboratory on current and planned activities, to dicsuss future directions and to initiate new collaborations. It is open to all researchers at the Lab interested in Quantum Information, Science and Technology R&D. Interested participants are invited to present a brief overview of their recent and current quantum research, and any plans and ideas for future research. Talks will be 10 minutes in length followed by 5 minutes for questions. Deadlines:

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.
