The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is sponsoring a ladies night for women interested in climbing their wall. The event is from 5:30 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19 and is open to members and nonmembers. The wall is the YMCA's 32-foot-high climbing wall, said Jennifer Witt of the YMCA. Interested participants must sign a release of liability form and parents must accompany girls under age 12. Girls under age 18 must have parents or legal guardian also sign the liability form. First-time Friday and Super Sunday also is an opportunity for members of the public to scale the climbing wall. First timers can tackle the challenge from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Fridays or 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays. The same liability guidelines are in place as for the women. United Blood Services and the Los Alamos Civitans Club, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is hosting a community blood drive Nov. 17-21 in the Parish Hall at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3700 Canyon Road. United Blood Services will give a special gift to those who have donated four times during calendar year 2003. On Friday, Nov. 21, UBS will give donors a 2004 calendar. Blood donations can be given
from noon to 7 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Updated 11/5/03 EPA accepting nominations for Green Chemistry Award The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is accepting nominations for the 2004 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards. The Presidential rank awards recognize innovative chemical technologies that incorporate green chemistry into chemical design, manufacture and use. Green chemistry is the use of chemistry to prevent pollution. Nominated technologies should reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances from a chemical product or process. Any individual, group or organization, both nonprofit and for profit, including academia, government and industry, may nominate a green chemistry technology for these awards. Self-nominations are welcome and expected. Typically, five awards are given each year: one to an academic researcher, one to a small business, and the rest in specific areas of green chemistry. A nominated technology must have reached a significant milestone within the past five years in the United States. Nominations must be postmarked by Dec. 31 to be eligible for the 2004 awards, which will be presented at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC on June 28, 2004. The seminar is at The Dome at the Ohkay Casino and Resort (San Juan Casino). The topic for this seminar will be "Introduction of Record Preservation Issues and Practices." The seminar speaker will be Marlan Green, Preservation Field Services Officer, of the Amigos Library Services. The cost for the seminar will be $125 for ARMA members and $150 for non-ARMA members. Refreshments and lunch will be included. No cancellations and no refunds but substitutions will be allowed. This seminar will address concerns about improving the care and use of the Laboratory's record collections. It will provide important information on how materials deteriorate and what to do to limit (and not contribute to) this process. Updated 10/29/03 YMCA accepting registrations for youth basketball The Los Alamos Family YMCA is registerings for the Youth Basketball Co-Ed League. Two divisions are offered, LA Nets and Y Road Warriors. LA Nets is for girls and boys in grades 1st - 8th. The division practices two times a week in White Rock and Los Alamos and plays Saturday games in Los Alamos beginning in January. Season runs Dec. 1 to Feb. 28. Grades 7th - 8th will start Dec. 8 to accommodate Los Alamos Middle School try-outs. Y Road Warrior teams are made by try-outs and teams will travel frequently. Two boys teams are offered, 5th grade/11 and under and 6th grade/12 and under. Season may fluctuate due to tournaments. Registration is Oct. 14 to Nov. 16. Volunteers are needed to coach, referee and be team parents. Updated 10/22/03 Second LANL Quantum Workshop on Dec. 16 and 17 The Quantum Institute Steering Committee is sponsoring a Laboratory-wide workshop on Quantum Information, Science and Technology on Dec. 16 and 17 in the Quantum Institute Briefing Center (TA-3, SM-40, Room N101). The purpose of the workshop is to update all those interested in quantum research at the Laboratory on current and planned activities, to dicsuss future directions and to initiate new collaborations. It is open to all researchers at the Lab interested in Quantum Information, Science and Technology R&D. Interested participants are invited to present a brief overview of their recent and current quantum research, and any plans and ideas for future research. Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required.
