Hair yesterday, gone todayBoebinger shaves beard for United Way campaign Greg Boebinger, seated center, Materials Science and Technology (MST) Division deputy leader was speechless, and beard-less, after being surprised by co-workers wearing fake beards Thursday afternoon. Boebinger agreed to shave his beard to raise funds for the Laboratory's 2004 United Way giving campaign. The beard came off Wednesday night live on community access television PAC-8. MST Division's "MST-bay" silent auction raised $10,532.36 in pledges and donations, with Boebinger's beard accounting for $4,327.08 of the total. Fifty-two items for auction generated about 475 bids from across the Laboratory.

The Lab's 2004 "Caring that Changes Our Communities" United Way giving campaign continues through Nov. 14. Through Wednesday, about $464,000 has been raised in pledges and donations. More United Way fundraising events are scheduled next week, including a frito pie sale Wednesday sponsored by Computing, Communications and Networking (CCN) Division and a potluck and basket bonanza Thursday sponsored by the Chemistry (C) Division. Additionally, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Supply Chain Management (SUP) divisions are hosting a bowlathon Nov. 15 in Española, while the Industrial Business Development (IBD) Division continues to sell cookbooks for $10 with all proceeds going to the giving campaign. Lab organizations planning United Way special events should contact the Community Relations (CRO) Office at 5-4400 to have the events listed on the United Way calendar.
