Nano-materials technology is subject of next Director's Colloquium on Tuesday

Nano-materials technology is the subject of a Director's Colloquium at 1:10 p.m., Tuesday in the Physics Building Auditorium at Technical Area 3.

Professor Herbert Gleiter of the Institute for Nanotechnology, will present the lecture called "Nanostructured Solids: A Gateway to Elements that Lie Between the Elements of the Periodic Table."

"A constrained state of solid matter is known to exist in the cores of crystal—for example—in the cores of intercrystalline interfaces," Gleiter said in an abstract. This constrained state of solid matter differs structurally and property wise from other forms of solids in terms of solids via their nanostructures," Gleiter said.

Gleiter is director of the Institute of Nanotechnology in Karlsruhe, Germany. He earned his doctoral degree in physics at the University of Stuttgart. He also is the recipient of numerous scientific awards, including the Masing Prize of the German Society of Metals, the Karl-Schurz Award of the University of Wisconsin and the Heyn Medal of the German Society of Materials Science.

The colloquium will be broadcast on Labnet Channel 9 and can be accessed through the Internet using Real Media Live software or through IPTV.

For more information, contact Yuntian Theodore Zhu of the Superconductivity Technology Center (MST-STC) at 7-4029 or write to yzhu@lanl.gov by electronic mail.
