Wednesday, October 29, 2003 Newest issue of Los Alamos NewsLetter now out, onlineThe current issue of the Los Alamos NewsLetter for the week of Oct. 27 is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week. "The Department of Energy should want a science lab, not a factory," said new University of California President Robert Dynes. His all-employee meeting is covered on Page 1. Also on Page 1 is information about another VIP visit to the Lab: royalty paid a call. Page 2 of this issue is all about safety. A message from Laboratory Director G. Peter Nanos again emphasizes safety. Nanos has instituted a new Integrated Work Management Committee that is designed to improve work-control practices. Safety tips for halloween also can be found on Page 2. Though it may seem as if we will never get a "real" winter again, Page 3 provides information about the Laboratory's operating schedule during inclement weather. Pages 4 though 6 detail UC Laboratory employees' and retirees' health-care options and changes for calendar year 2004. There's a lot of information in there and Web addresses for more. Page 7 holds the Laboratory's draft code of ethics - a grass-root initiative of the Diversity/Affirmative Action Board that is so important to Nanos that he has made it part of the Director's Performance Improvement Program. Page 8 is all about caring. The Laboratory's 2004 United Way giving campaign is in full swing. Read about the campaign and how the money donated to it can help others. Employees can access the Los Alamos NewsLetter at http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/news/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so. To change an address, call 7-3565.
