Tuesday, October 28, 2003 New issue of UC's LabUpdate now availableThe new issue of the University of California's LabUpdate is now available online. The publication is a periodic report from UC about scientific research, projects and programs at Los Alamos, Berkeley and Livermore national laboratories. This issue includes a message from new UC President Robert Dynes, who earlier this month succeeded Richard Atkinson in the president's post. In his message, Dynes talks about the importance of to the university of the three national labs operated by UC, noting that at this time, the university is proceeding with the intention of competing to retain the operating contract to run the labs. Dynes also noted the hiring of Robert Foley as the new UC vice president for Laboratory management, and the importance of two-way communications. A separate article summarizes Dynes' Oct. 7 visit to the Laboratory. This issue also has information on research at Los Alamos into standardized procedures for investigating and responding to biological threats such as from bioterrorist attacks; a Lawrence Berkeley team exploring ways to develop bone-like materials that could greatly improve implant devices; and a Lawrence Livermore researcher's work as part of an international team that is helping to show a connection between fluctuations in solar intensity and climate and ecosystem changes near the North Pole.
