Royalty pays visit to Laboratory

His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, of the United Kingdom, came to the Laboratory on Tuesday, the first royal visit to the Lab in more than a decade. Here The Duke of York, left, listens to Laboratory Director G. Peter Nanos describe various areas of the Laboratory and the Pajarito Plateau using an aerial photo in the Bradbury Science Museum downtown. Behind Nanos are John Rhoades, the museum's director, Mike Burns of the Director's Office and Ray Juzaitis, partially obscured, associate director for weapons programs (ADWP). The Duke of York is fourth in line to the British crown after his older brother His Royal Highness Prince Charles and Charles' sons Princes William and Harry. Department of Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham and Gov. Bill Richardson requested the Laboratory "get acquainted tour" for Prince Andrew who also received myriad briefings, including those on the history of the weapons program and UK and U.S.collaborations at the Lab; homeland security; and bio threat and global health. Earlier royal visitors to the Laboratory included in December 1958, Queen Frederika of Greece accompanied by her daughter Princess Sophie; May 1959, King Baudouin of Belgium; September 1959, Princess Sao Bo Noam of Burma; and December 1959, "the young" Aga Khan toured the health lab; September 1989, Prince Phillip of Spain.
