Tuesday, October 21, 2003 Requirements for recycling metal from areas posted for radiological hazardsOn July 13, 2000, the Secretary of Energy suspended the unrestricted release of scrap metals from nuclear facilities destined for recycling (http://recycle.lanl.gov/PR-00-182.pdf). The suspension is to ensure that contaminated materials are not recycled into consumer products and that the management of scrap materials at nuclear production sites is improved. A moratorium on recycling volumetrically contaminated scrap metal was imposed on Jan. 12, 2000. To read the notice, click here.
