Tuesday, October 21, 2003 Foley new UC vice president for Laboratory managementRobert Foley is the University of California's new vice president for Laboratory management. Foley replaces Bruce Darling, who had held the post in an acting capacity. "We are honored that Admiral Foley is taking on this leadership position. Bob is a well-respected, serious manager with deep expertise that will be extremely beneficial as we move toward a decision regarding competition in the laboratory management environment. The work of the national laboratories is critical to our nation's security, and Bob has the experience, the drive and the leadership abilities to ensure that scientific and technological breakthroughs continue while we continue to make management improvements." UC President Robert Dynes said Monday. "Admiral Foley is a wonderful choice as [University of California] vice president for Laboratory management," said Laboratory Director G. Peter Nanos. "Considering his distinguished military career, his years of experience at the Department of Energy as Defense Programs director and his intimate knowledge of Laboratory operations, he brings both the leadership skills and notable intellect needed to help ensure that the University California tri-lab system will set the standard for national security science." As vice president, Foley, a longtime naval commander and consultant on energy and defense issues, will have primary responsibility for the university's management of the three national laboratories it administers on behalf of the Department of Energy and its National Nuclear Security Administration. UC manages Los Alamos, Lawrence Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories. Darling, also UC's senior vice president for university affairs, had held the post in an acting capacity since January when John McTague resigned. To read a UC news release, click here.
