Pedestrian access changes upcoming around TA-3

As work begins in earnest on the new National Security Sciences Building at Technical Area 3, Laboratory workers will see changes in pedestrian access areas as soon as next week.

Work begins on Saturday with the construction of temporary sidewalks around the southeast corner of the Otowi Building and between the Otowi loading dock and the northwest entry gate to the Nicholas Metropolis Center for Modeling and Simulation, according to Kevin Hogan of Design Engineering and Construction Services (FWO-DECS) and a project leader.

Once the temporary sidewalks are completed this weekend, construction will begin Tuesday to extend an existing construction fence between the Administration and Otowi buildings. The fence will extend east to the sidewalk in front of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center and north to the Otowi Building parking lot. In addition, the fence will extend to the south side of the Otowi Building, closing off a walking path that currently exists south of Otowi. Pedestrians will now have to go through the Otowi Building to access the west side of TA-3 or use a sidewalk north of the Otowi Building parallel to West Jemez Road.

Hogan said the bicycle lockers in the horseshoe area between the Otowi and Administration buildings are being removed. Anyone with personal items in these lockers should remove them as soon as possible. The bicycle lockers and bike racks will be relocated to the east side of the Otowi Building, Hogan added.

On the weekend of Oct. 18, workers will begin installing temporary sidewalks and a new security fence along the north side of the Administration Building. This will bring the security perimeter closer to the building and will allow for demolition of the old badge office later this year. A new security entrance will be installed prior to the demolition (of the old badge office).

The National Security Sciences Building will replace the present Administration Building at TA-3. The 275,000-square-foot building is scheduled to be completed in 2006.

For more information, call the project office at 7-9737.
