Wednesday, September 24, 2003 Editor's note: As the Laboratory continues implementing improved strategic and business plans, the Daily Newsbulletin will provide information on the continuing development of those plans - particularly the communications initiative. Part of this effort is communications tips designed to help improve daily communications with internal and external audiences.
Quick get-togethersResearch by the Harvard Business Review found that quick, informal huddles -- rather than formal meetings -- were more effective in sharing crucial information. The huddles alerted everyone to urgent issues and concerns that emerge over the day or week. These quick get-togethers are most effective when held at the start of the day. Keep it clear and concise Many routine presentations can drag on, losing their impact and forcing a meeting to go beyond its useful life. It was a lesson not lost on President Franklin D Roosevelt, who offered this advice: "Be sincere, be brief and be seated."
