Nationally-known economist and climate change expert Jae Edmonds will discuss technological solutions for climate change and their economical implications at a seminar Thursday at the College of Santa Fe.
The talk, "Energy, Technology and Climate Change," is sponsored by the Laboratory's Energy and Environment Council and CSF. The talk begins at 7 p.m., and is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Forum located next to the Fogelson Library on the CSF campus, which is off St. Michael's Drive.
Edmonds is a well-known author and expert on climate change and the interactions between energy, technology, policy and the environment. A lead author for all three major assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, he has frequently testified before Congress, and has briefed the vice president and the president's cabinet on climate issues. Edmonds, who received his Ph.D. in economics from Duke University in 1974, is a senior staff scientist and technical leader of Economic Programs at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Joint Global Change Research Institute, a collaboration with the University of Maryland. Edmonds also is an adjunct professor of public policy at the University of Maryland.
According to Edmonds, fossil fuels, which supply most of the world's energy needs, release more than six billion metric tons of carbon per year, affecting the climate. Addressing climate change will inevitably involve the accelerated development and deployment of technologies that imply a revolutionary transformation of the global energy system. The seminar will focus on the economic implications of applying environmentally-friendly energy technologies.
