Thursday, September 4, 2003 Newest issue of Los Alamos NewsLetter to be distributed this weekThe current issue of the Los Alamos NewsLetter for the week of Sept. 1 is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week. Featured in this issue is an article on gamma-ray bursts. The phenomena first discovered at Los Alamos 30 years ago are the most powerful explosions in the universe. Noted on Page 2 is an editorial from Richard Marquez, associate director for administration (ADA), who discusses the new corporate banking contract the Laboratory has with Wells Fargo. The page also has the Web site for the Welch study on pay equity. The largest field of contestants, including an out-of-state team, participated in this year's Hazmat Challenge at the Lab. Page 3 showcases the event in photos and text. School is in session just about everywhere, now that it is after Labor Day. The safety tip on Page 4 alerts parents and children of the need to be careful on the daily bus trip to and from school. In addition, there is a notice about University of California Television programming now being shown on Los Alamos public access television, PAC 8. This page also carries the notice of Laboratory patent awards. Construction is in full swing and on Page 5, two building dedications and one groundbreaking are pictorially noted. As part of the improvements in the Laboratory's business practices, the Lab has established a Cost Allowability Board to review its transactions; the story about the new board can be found on Page 5 as well. Newsmakers continue to run on Page 6, where there are articles on four new managers. In addition, there is a belated obituary on the passing of a Manhattan Project pioneer, Alvin Van Vessem, who worked on high explosives. Van Vessem died earlier this summer. Held because of space constraints last month, the August service anniversaries are on Page 7, as is a safety brief reminding members of the work force to be aware of possible hazards at work. The Spotlight this issue falls on two Laboratory employees and their buffaloes. Find how natives of Denmark and New Mexico came to own a small herd of North American bison. Employees can access the Los Alamos Newsletter at http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/news/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so.
