The Research Library will sponsor two Knovel training sessions from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Chemistry Division Auditorium (TA 46, Bldg 535, Rm 103) and from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Library's Training Room (TA 3, Bldg 207, Rm 115) on Sept. 10. Knovel has a database of over 500 science and engineering reference handbooks, databases and conference proceedings. Including CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, Marks' Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers, Materials Selection Deskbook, Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook and ANTEC Annual Technical Conferences Doug Sears of Knovel Corporation will lead the sessions. Mesa Public Library is taking donations of books, videos, CDs, video games, DVDs or records. The Library in Los Alamos runs a small store just inside its main entrance that sells donated items to the public. A staff of volunteers runs the store, and the money raised is used to buy new books and other materials for the library. The Mesa Public Library is located at 2400 Central Avenue. Dance program The Family YMCA also is registering youths age 11 and above for a beginning hip-hop class. The class begins Sept. 9 and meets from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Drama Room at Los Alamos Middle School. This class costs $19 for Family YMCA members, $26 for nonmembers. Additionally, a beginning country western dance class starts Oct. 3 and consists of four, two-hour sessions. Updated 8/28/03 Volunteer opportunity Big Brothers Big Sisters Los Alamos Lunch Buddies are looking for volunteers to join the team. They have been in existence since 1996 and have helped hundreds of children in Española (since 1998) and Los Alamos. Lunch Buddies is a proven, effective way to provide adult mentoring and friendship for children (kindergarten through 6th grade) who need a little extra help to build self esteem, promote healthy lifestyles and relations, and to resist self-destructive behavior like dropping out of school, joining gangs, smoking, drinking or doing drugs. Volunteers meet with their Lunch Buddies for an hour a week, on school grounds, for two semesters to eat breakfast (Española) or lunch (Española, Los Alamos, White Rock) together. Updated 8/29/03 Wild Wednesdays program registration under way at Los Alamos Family YMCA The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is now registering youths in grades one through six for its Wild Wednesdays program. The program, which includes instructor-led sports oriented games, runs from 1 to 5 p.m., at the YMCA gymnasium downtown. Los Alamos Bus does pick up children from schools and drops them off at the YMCA. Registration is monthly or on a drop-in basis. Metabolic Rate Revealed - That elusive metabolic rate - calories burned - can now be individually measured and better understood for weight management, fitness goals and more. Entries will be drawn and winning, accredited K-12 schools will receive a TIG desktop personal computer and 17-inch color Princeton monitors at an award ceremony. TIG will mentor area high school students who have an interest in computer technology and build and configure the computers. TIG will award a total of 40 computers and displays to Española and Albuquerque K-12 schools; however, both area programs will work independently of each other. Albuquerque prizes will be appointed by a local education committee. Updated 7/31/03 LANL Energetic Materials Review on Sept. 29 - Oct. 2 The 2003 LANL Energetic Materials Review is scheduled for Sept. 29 - Oct. 2. The objective of the review will be to present a broad perspective of the Laboratory's energetic materials related R&D activities that support tactical and strategic nuclear and conventional weapons deliverables. Eight topical sessions with associated poster sessions will be presented, each beginning with a short overview to highlight key progress in the past year and future plans. Topical sessions: HE Synthesis, Formulations & Advanced Energetics; HE Engineering, Processing & Characterization; HE Characterization & Constituent Modeling; Non-shock Initiation (Thermal, Impact, Shear & Friction); Energetic Materials Aging; Initiation Systems & Shock Initiation; Shock Chemistry & Reactive Burn; and Detonation Physics, DSD & EOS Unclassified sessions are scheduled at the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center. Only badged personnel will be allowed to attend the presentations. Some attendance restrictions may apply to UCNI and/or OUO presentations. Updated 7/14/03 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.
