Los Alamos Mountaineers meeting on Wednesday

The August meeting of the Los Alamos Mountaineers will feature Mark Anderson’s “Alpine Climbing in North America: Remote Ranges and High Places.” His talk will feature his proudest mountaineering achievement, an alpine-style ascent of Cassin Ridge on Mt. Denali. The talk begins at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the High School Speech Theater.

The public is welcome and there is no admission charge. The talk will be preceded by reports of Club trips, past and future, starting at 7:30 p.m. and a social time with snacks. Membership information and the Club schedule can be found at http://www.losalamos.org/climb/zLAMC.html online.

West Nile Virus information

Occupational Medicine (HSR-2) has been receiving a number of telephone calls and inquiries concerning the West Nile Virus, prompted in part by the recent case of the illness confirmed in a Santa Fe County woman.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta has developed a Web page with useful information. The Web page can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/index.htm online.

The New Mexico Department of Health also has information on West Nile Virus on its Web page. It can be found at http://www.health.state.nm.us/website.nsf/frames?ReadForm online. Or call the department's Office of Epidemiology at 827-0006 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Wellness Center offers Biofeedback class

Are you getting feedback from people around you that you need to learn to relax? Biofeedback may be a great tool to learn valuable techniques for relaxation, improved health and enhanced work performance. Introduction to Biofeedback will teach some of the basic biofeedback techniques and how to put them to use immediately. Thursday (Aug. 21), noon to 1 p.m., Wellness Center Room 106. Technology Expo Aug. 26 in Otowi Building

The Federal Business Council is hosting a information technology expo Aug. 26 in the Otowi Building Cafeteria side rooms at Technical Area 3.

The expo is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is free and open to all Laboratory workers.

More than 20 exhibitors will showcase the latest information technology products and services. Light refreshments will be available.

YMCA classes

Martial arts class - The Los Alamos Family YMCA is offering a Hsing-I Chuan martial arts class beginning Sept. 2. Hsing-I Chuan is a Chinese martial art that helps cultivate internal energy and balance between the mind and body, according to a YMCA news release. Debbie Bryan, a second-degree black belt, is the instructor. For more information, contact John Marble at 662-3100.

Basic acting classes begin Sept. 15 at the Los Alamos Family YMCA. There will be classes for youths age 12 to 15 and for ages 16 and above. The introductory class focuses on the body, mind and voice in acting. Participants will be introduced to pantomine, improvisation and articulation exercises to build stage and screen performance skills. The class ends Dec. 10. The cost for youths age 12 to 15 is $80 for Los Alamos Family YMCA members; $115 for nonmembers. The cost for people age 16 and above is $90 for Los Alamos Family YMCA members; $125 for nonmembers. Woodshop classes are being offered by the Los Alamos Family YMCA and Los Alamos Middle School. The first session begins Sept. 9. A second session begins Nov. 4 and continues through Jan. 15, 2004. Classes meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday at Los Alamos Middle School.
The class teaches basic drafting skills, computer-aided design, proper operation and safe use of power tools and different types of assembly. Los Alamos Middle School woodshop teacher Richard Stohner is teaching the classes, which cost $45 for the first family YMCA member and $18 for each additional family member, and $63 for the first member of a family not a member of the YMCA and $23 for each additional member of the family. TIG sponsors "Computers for Kids"

The Technology Integration Group, a Laboratory vendor, is donating 20 new computers to kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms in Española. Nominations of schools to receive a new computer can be made by calling (505) 830-8400 or going to www.tig.com/register online and selecting Computers for Kids New Mexico.

Entries will be drawn and winning, accredited K-12 schools will receive a TIG desktop personal computer and 17-inch color Princeton monitors at an award ceremony. TIG will mentor area high school students who have an interest in computer technology and build and configure the computers.

TIG will award a total of 40 computers and displays to Española and Albuquerque K-12 schools; however, both area programs will work independently of each other. Albuquerque prizes will be appointed by a local education committee.

Project Management Overview course Aug. 28 at Canyon School

Training and Developing (HR-TD) is sponsoring a one-day project management orientation for Lab personnel who supervise project managers or project team members, and for those who sponsor and fund projects. The course is Aug. 28 at the Canyon School Complex off Central Avenue.

Participants will learn about the processes and necessary sequence of events that lead to successful projects as well as learn effective methods for communicating about project status, problems and adjustments to project schedules, scope and budgets.

LANL Energetic Materials Review on Sept. 29 - Oct. 2

The 2003 LANL Energetic Materials Review is scheduled for Sept. 29 - Oct. 2. The objective of the review will be to present a broad perspective of the Laboratory's energetic materials related R&D activities that support tactical and strategic nuclear and conventional weapons deliverables.

Eight topical sessions with associated poster sessions will be presented, each beginning with a short overview to highlight key progress in the past year and future plans.

Topical sessions: HE Synthesis, Formulations & Advanced Energetics; HE Engineering, Processing & Characterization; HE Characterization & Constituent Modeling; Non-shock Initiation (Thermal, Impact, Shear & Friction); Energetic Materials Aging; Initiation Systems & Shock Initiation; Shock Chemistry & Reactive Burn; and Detonation Physics, DSD & EOS

Unclassified sessions are scheduled at the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center. Only badged personnel will be allowed to attend the presentations. Some attendance restrictions may apply to UCNI and/or OUO presentations.

One classified session is scheduled for the Forum on Thursday afternoon. Attendance at classified sessions by DOE and non-DOE personnel will require clearance access to SRD, Sigmas 1-10. For all Lab DOE personnel, verification of your Sigma 1-10 status by your group management (via fax or email to Janet at 5-2828/neff@lanl.gov) will be required prior at the start of the review if you wish to attend any of the presentations in the classified session. 

Registration for all attendees is requested by Sept. 12.

Offered by Interfacing Concepts in Albuquerque

Interfacing Concepts is again offering a number of courses for Laboratory technical professionals next month at the Ramada Mountainvew Hotel at Interstate 40 and Lomas Boulevard in Albuquerque.

Aug. 21 – 22: IEEE-488, RS-232 and the Computer Course: learn IEEE-488 and RS-232 common terms, configuration, communication with instruments from the computer keyboard, how the IEEE-488 and RS-232 actually work, and how to work them the way they were designed to work properly. This hands-on course is for people who already know a computer language and know some of the IEEE-488 and RS-232 concepts, but really need to know the correct way to use them, the way they were designed to be used with instruments. Cost: $1,000.00 per person.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
