Laboratory to host alliance-building workshop

The Laboratory is hosting an all-day workshop on Creating and Managing Strategic Alliances on Aug. 22 at the Los Alamos Research Park Conference Center (Building 1). Gene Slowinski, a leading researcher and consultant in strategic business alliances will lead the workshop.

Slowinski is the director of strategic alliance research in the Graduate School of Management at Rutgers University and a managing partner in the Alliance Management Group, a consulting firm devoted to the formation and management of strategic alliances. Prior to forming the Alliance Management Group, he held management positions at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Bellcore, and Novartis Corp. In addition to having a doctoral degree in management, Slowinski also has master's degrees in business administration and science.

The purpose of the workshop is to help managers and team members understand the best practices in creating and managing strategic alliances, and learn valuable tools for planning, negotiating and implementing alliances. These practices will then be applied to specific initiatives of interest to workshop participants.

Among other things, conference participants will learn how successful managers coordinate resources across organizational boundaries, what managers do to accelerate alliance implementation and goal achievement and what are the early warning signs of trouble in the alliance.

Laboratory participants will join representatives from the local business community in the workshop in order to help build stronger working relationships with economic development and business partners in Northern New Mexico. The workshop starts at 10 a.m. and continues until approximately 5:30 p.m. The workshop is limited to 50 participants, with enrollment on a first come, first served basis.

The fee for the workshop is $100 and pre-registration is required. Registration forms and additional details about the workshop can be obtained from Karla Garduño of Industrial Business Development (IBD) at 7-7683 or kgarduno@lanl.gov by electronic mail. Participants must return the registration form, along with fee payment, to the address provided on the form by 5 p.m., Friday (Aug. 15).
