Updated 8/13/03 YMCA classes Martial arts class - The Los Alamos Family YMCA is offering a Hsing-I Chuan martial arts class beginning Sept. 2. Hsing-I Chuan is a Chinese martial art that helps cultivate internal energy and balance between the mind and body, according to a YMCA news release. There will be classes for youths age 12 to 15 and for ages 16 and above. The introductory class focuses on the body, mind and voice in acting. Participants will be introduced to pantomine, improvisation and articulation exercises to build stage and screen performance skills. The class ends Dec. 10. The cost for youths age 12 to 15 is $80 for Los Alamos Family YMCA members; $115 for nonmembers. The cost for people age 16 and above is $90 for Los Alamos Family YMCA members; $125 for nonmembers. Updated 8/7/03 Parking lot by power plant at TA-3 closed this week Utilities and Infrastructure (FWO-UI) plans to close off the parking lot adjacent to the Technical Area 3 power plant (TA-3-022) from Wednesday through Sunday (Aug. 13 - Aug. 17) to accommodate a large crane that will be assembled and operated on the north side of the power plant. The crane will be used to remove a 45-ton electric generator inside of the power plant. The tentative plan is to reopen the parking lot on Monday, Aug. 18. Updated 8/7/03 Los Alamos Community Blood Drive is this week United Blood Services and the Los Alamos Civitan Club, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is hosting a community blood drive this week in the Parish Hall at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3700 Canyon Road. Blood donations can be given from noon to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Home Run Pizza will be donating a free personal pizza to all donors and United Blood Services T-shirts will be given to all donors. The Food and Drug Administration has given United Blood Services the green light to begin using a shorter health history interview with frequent blood donors. Now donors who have given blood at least three times with United Blood Services, with their most recent donation within the past six months, will spend less time in the interview process and be on their way more quickly. Laboratory workers who volunteer without compensation as blood donors during Laboratory-approved blood drives are excused from work with pay for the time necessary to accomplish this purpose. Time off for the blood donation must not exceed four hours. For accounting purposes, absences for blood donation are reported in quarter-hour increments for nonexempt employees and one-hour increments for exempt employees. The code for blood donation is "BD." Registration continues through Aug. 18. The program introduces children to soccer through instruction and limited competition. The program meets twice a week for six weeks beginning Aug. 25 and ending Oct. 3. The kinderkick program costs $25 for YMCA members; $35 for nonmembers. Volunteer coaches and teaching assistants also are needed. No previous coaching experience is necessary. Participants will learn about the processes and necessary sequence of events that lead to successful projects as well as learn effective methods for communicating about project status, problems and adjustments to project schedules, scope and budgets. The objective of the review will be to present a broad perspective of the Laboratory's energetic materials related R&D activities that support tactical and strategic nuclear and conventional weapons deliverables. Eight topical sessions with associated poster sessions will be presented, each beginning with a short overview to highlight key progress in the past year and future plans. Topical sessions: HE Synthesis, Formulations & Advanced Energetics; HE Engineering, Processing & Characterization; HE Characterization & Constituent Modeling; Non-shock Initiation (Thermal, Impact, Shear & Friction); Energetic Materials Aging; Initiation Systems & Shock Initiation; Shock Chemistry & Reactive Burn; and Detonation Physics, DSD & EOS Unclassified sessions are scheduled at the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center. Only badged personnel will be allowed to attend the presentations. Some attendance restrictions may apply to UCNI and/or OUO presentations. The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required.
