High school, undergraduate and graduate students from the Computing, Communications and Networking (CCN) Division will showcase their research at a divisional poster session from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Aug. 4 in the Nicholas C. Metropolis Center for Modeling and Simulation (SCC Building) at Technical Area 3. The poster session provides an opportunity for the CCN year-round and summer students to present their research to their peers, Laboratory mentors and managers. Staff with L or Q clearances are able to access the SCC building lobby. Lab personnel without clearances must arrange for an escort and bring escort paperwork (Post #411, 412 or 414; SCC is Building #2324, Rooms 1000 and 1014, hallways, corridors and bathroom). The first annual Los Alamos Fat Tire Festival will be held Aug. 8-10 in Los Alamos. The festival offers events for bicycling enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. Activities begin with an elite three-stage race for pro and expert racers Friday evening (Aug. 8). Saturday will host the festival feature event, the Pajarito Punishment cross-country race. This will be stage two for the pro and expert races and also includes a sport and beginner race and citizens tour. The Pajarito Punishment is a challenging 20-mile cross-country course with more than 3,000 feet of cumulative elevation gain. After a start with the Los Alamos County Fair parade, the course starts in Los Alamos off 48th Street on the perimeter trail and climbs to the ski hill via Pipeline Road then descends Pajarito canyon to the finish. The action will continue on Sunday at the Pajarito Ski Hill with stage three for the pro and expert racers, a downhill race on a new course and a kid's race. Fees for the race are Elite Stage Race: $50, Pajarito Punishment Race and Tour: $25, Downhill: $35 and Kid's Race: Free. There is a $5 late/day of race additional fee to the above fees. The Fat Tire Festival is co-sponsored by the Tuff Riders Mountain Bike Club, a Laboratory sanctioned organization. The workshop will be taught by Erika Jones, who has been teaching PM and helping projects get off the ground for almost 20 years. Registration continues through Aug. 18. The program introduces children to soccer through instruction and limited competition. The program meets twice a week for six weeks beginning Aug. 25 and ending Oct. 3. The kinderkick program costs $25 for YMCA members; $35 for nonmembers. Volunteer coaches and teaching assistants also are needed. No previous coaching experience is necessary. Participants will learn about the processes and necessary sequence of events that lead to successful projects as well as learn effective methods for communicating about project status, problems and adjustments to project schedules, scope and budgets. Updated 7/23/03 NNSA to hold public meeting on draft environmental assessment for proposed trails management program at Laboratory The Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration is hosting a public meeting July 30 regarding the pre-decisional draft Environmental Assessment (DOE/EA-1431) for the proposed Trails Management Program at the Laboratory. The meeting is at 6 p.m. in Fuller Lodge downtown. The proposed action would consist of implementing a Trails Management Program at the Lab to address Lab trails use by the public, Lab workers and officially invited guests. The trails closure alternative would result in the closing of all existing trails to the public and Laboratory workers for recreational use purposes. Lab workers and the public is invited to comment on the predecisional draft environmental assessment. Copies are available in DOE Public Reading rooms at 1619 Central Avenue in Los Alamos and in the Government Information Department of Zimmerman Library at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Updated 7/17/03 LANL Energetic Materials Review on Sept. 29 - Oct. 2 The 2003 LANL Energetic Materials Review is scheduled for Sept. 29 - Oct. 2. The objective of the review will be to present a broad perspective of the Laboratory's energetic materials related R&D activities that support tactical and strategic nuclear and conventional weapons deliverables. Eight topical sessions with associated poster sessions will be presented, each beginning with a short overview to highlight key progress in the past year and future plans. Topical sessions: HE Synthesis, Formulations & Advanced Energetics; HE Engineering, Processing & Characterization; HE Characterization & Constituent Modeling; Non-shock Initiation (Thermal, Impact, Shear & Friction); Energetic Materials Aging; Initiation Systems & Shock Initiation; Shock Chemistry & Reactive Burn; and Detonation Physics, DSD & EOS Unclassified sessions are scheduled at the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center. Only badged personnel will be allowed to attend the presentations. Some attendance restrictions may apply to UCNI and/or OUO presentations. One classified session is scheduled for the Forum on Thursday afternoon. Attendance at classified sessions by DOE and non-DOE personnel will require clearance access to SRD, Sigmas 1-10. Aug. 21 – 22: IEEE-488, RS-232 and the Computer Course: learn IEEE-488 and RS-232 common terms, configuration, communication with instruments from the computer keyboard, how the IEEE-488 and RS-232 actually work, and how to work them the way they were designed to work properly. This hands-on course is for people who already know a computer language and know some of the IEEE-488 and RS-232 concepts, but really need to know the correct way to use them, the way they were designed to be used with instruments. Updated 7/14/03 CalPers long-term care plan enrollment extended Open Enrollment for the CalPERS long term care plan has been extended though July 31. University of California Laboratory employees and their families are eligible for the program, which is designed to offer protection from the potentially devastating cost of long-term care. Long-term care is the extended care needed to perform activities of daily living like bathing, dressing or eating caused by accidents, chronic conditions or frailty of old age. Application packets can be obtained from the CalPERS Web site at http://www.calpers.ca.gov/longtermcare/apply/app-kit.htm online. Updated 7/3/03 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.
