Director's Development Program nomination deadline is July 21

The nomination deadline for the new Director's Development Program is Monday, July 21. The Director's Development Program targets group level management and their potential for senior management roles. It is one part of the Lab's effort to develop a succession management program for the Laboratory.

The Director's Development Program is one element of the path the Lab is taking to realize its view of leadership. The new program provides customized developmental experiences, such as working in different divisions across the Laboratory, to prepare individuals for successive leadership roles. It features learning on the job, including the opportunity to rotate into special internal and external assignments for three to six months and in some cases up to a year, according to Becca Phillips, of the Human Resources (HR) Division, program manager.

"My goal for the [director’s] development program is to develop current leaders to a new standard and to prepare some leaders to transition to successive levels," said Interim Laboratory Director G. Peter Nanos. "I want to bring together a diverse group with various kinds of leadership and management experience.

"One of my goals is to build a stronger culture of leadership here at the Lab," Nanos continued. "My vision is that the institution will come to respect excellence in its leaders just as it does the scientific and technical acumen that has underpinned our technological accomplishments."

Since program participants will undergo detailed assessment of their current leadership strengths and developmental needs, it will be possible to select developmental experiences and rotational assignments that provide the right experiences for each individual, said Phillips. The Director's Development Program merges the needs of the institution with new opportunities for the participants to create a focused developmental experience, she said.

"We're looking for individuals with a passion for leadership excellence who want to prepare themselves for the next level of leadership," said Phillips. "For all current or former group-level managers it all starts with a personal decision to nominate oneself."

A half-day orientation is scheduled for Aug. 25.
