Proper lifting
Here are some tips from the Health, Safety and Radiation Protection (HSR) Division
to ensure proper lifting.
- Hands should be between shoulders and knuckle height (distance above
floor when hands hang at sides);
- Securely grip objects to be lifted and keep
load close to the body;
- Lift smoothly, keeping the back as vertical as possible;
don't twist
or bend to the side;
- Wear properly fitting gloves when handling objects with hard,
sharp
or rough surfaces;
- Size up a load before you lift. Get help with heavy or awkward
loads.
Follow these steps and avoid back problems and other negative side effects
of improper lifting.
