UC regents meet next week in San Francisco

Interim Laboratory Director G. Peter Nanos could drop the interim title if regents of the University of California act at their meeting next week.

The regents are meeting July 16 and 17 at the UC, San Francisco Laurel Heights campus. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time.

Earlier this year, UC President Richard Atkinson told regents that he was recommending that Nanos become Los Alamos' permanent director. Nanos has been interim director since Jan. 6. If approved by the regents, Nanos would become the Laboratory's seventh director.

Some of the other items the regents are scheduled to discuss include a vote on 2003-04 student fees; adoption of new testing requirements for freshman admissions, starting with students taking the tests in 2005 to make UC's test requirements consistent with the newly revised SAT I and ACT; revision of the Faculty Code of Conduct with respect to faculty-student relations; an overview of the UC schools of medicine; update on the UC, Los Angeles Medical Center; an update on the UC-managed national laboratories; establishment of schools and colleges at UC, Merced; and a discussion of the university's potential acquisition of the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

The agenda for next week's meeting can be found at http://www.ucop.edu/regents/regmeet/july03.html online.
