Tips for safe camping
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration provided these tips to
help make camping safe and enjoyable.
Lightning, wind and hail:
- If tenting, move to a shelter house or inside a hard-topped
vehicle.
- If no shelter is available, seek refuge in a cave or under a thick
grove of trees that are taller than the tent.
Flash floods:
- Never camp next to streams, creeks or rivers. Heavy rain
can cause water levels to rise rapidly.
- Never cross rain-swollen creeks,
rivers or streams. The under-currents can carry a person downstream.
- If flash flooding does occur, move to higher
ground immediately.
Always be weather conscious when planning outdoor adventures.
