Wednesday, June 18, 2003 Assembly racks at Technical Area 3 to come downWork has started on removal of two buildings also known as the Assembly Racks at Technical Area 3. Infrastructure Projects' (FWO-IP) Decontamination and Decommissioning Team and Clauss Construction are doing the work for the Lab. "These buildings were used as support facilities for the United States underground nuclear testing program," said Joe Louck of FWO-IP. Located just south of West Jemez Road, both facilities were used until the late 1980s when they were made obsolete by the opening of the Rack Assembly and Alignment Complex at TA-60. "The majority of work will begin on Thursdays and end on Sundays to minimize the impact on normal Laboratory operations and traffic flow," said Louck. For safety reasons, the eastbound lanes of West Jemez Road will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekends of June 28-29 and July 12-13 while the racks are being lifted out of place. Traffic crews will be onsite to keep traffic moving smoothly through the construction area. For more information, contact the FWO-IP office at 5-8024. --Ed Kellum Other Headlines Second Astronomy Days talk tonight at Bradbury Science Museum more...
