"The Challenge: Making A World of Difference," is the theme of this year's seminar. The Laboratory is a platinum sponsor for this years conference. Amy Sahota of the Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO) is a driving force behind the platinum sponsorship and we owe her a debt of gratitude, said Maryrose Montalvo of the Nuclear Materials Technology (NMT) Division. The Albuquerque/Santa Fe/Los Alamos EEO Council, a nonprofit organization, sponsors the seminar annually to provide managers, supervisors and interested parties with an affordable way to stay current on the vital issues of employees rights. This years plenary and keynote speakers are Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord, first Navajo woman surgeon and faculty member at Dartmouth Medical School; Anne Thomas, attorney for World Bank; Dr. Lloyd Vigil, psychologist; and Randy Mascorella, executive director, Special Olympics New Mexico. The presentations will provide participants with an awareness, understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and beliefs on both a global and local level, said Montalvo. Two Laboratory employees are scheduled to speak at the conference: Laurie Quon and Berylene Rogers of the Diversity Office (DVO) will present on the Labs diversity calendar. Frances Castellano of High Performance Computing Systems (CCN-7) will perform the National Anthem at the opening ceremony. Castellano was named the 2002 Female Vocalist of the Yearby the 2002 State Hispanic Chamber Music Awards. Scheduled workshops will focus on constructive communication, age-related issues, workplace harassment, leadership during crisis and the University of Michigan Affirmative Action Case.
