Diversity/EEO awareness seminar July 23-24 in Albuquerque

The 18th annual Equal Employment Opportunity Diversity Training and Awareness seminar, sponsored by the Albuquerque/Santa Fe/Los Alamos EEO Council, is July 23 and 24 at the Marriott Pyramid North Hotel in Albuquerque.

"The Challenge: Making A World of Difference," is the theme of this year's seminar. The Laboratory is a platinum sponsor for this year’s conference.

“Amy Sahota of the Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO) is a driving force behind the platinum sponsorship and we owe her a debt of gratitude,” said Maryrose Montalvo of the Nuclear Materials Technology (NMT) Division.

The Albuquerque/Santa Fe/Los Alamos EEO Council, a nonprofit organization, sponsors the seminar annually to provide managers, supervisors and interested parties with an affordable way to stay current on the vital issues of employees’ rights. Participants also network while becoming proactive in employment issues.

This year’s plenary and keynote speakers are Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord, first Navajo woman surgeon and faculty member at Dartmouth Medical School; Anne Thomas, attorney for World Bank; Dr. Lloyd Vigil, psychologist; and Randy Mascorella, executive director, Special Olympics New Mexico. The presentations will provide participants with an awareness, understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and beliefs on both a global and local level, said Montalvo.

Two Laboratory employees are scheduled to speak at the conference: Laurie Quon and Berylene Rogers of the Diversity Office (DVO) will present on the Lab’s diversity calendar.

Frances Castellano of High Performance Computing Systems (CCN-7) will perform the National Anthem at the opening ceremony. Castellano was named the “2002 Female Vocalist of the Year”by the 2002 State Hispanic Chamber Music Awards.

Scheduled workshops will focus on constructive communication, age-related issues, workplace harassment, leadership during crisis and the University of Michigan Affirmative Action Case.

Registration is $130; checks or purchase orders will only be accepted and must accompany the registration form and be postmarked by July 1. Applications post marked after July 1 will not be accepted, however, on site registration is available at the door the day of the seminar for $200, checks or cash only.
