Public hearings on proposed CMR Building replacement

The public hearings are Tuesday (June 3) in Fuller Lodge on Central Avenue in Los Alamos and Wednesday (June 4) at the Pablo Roybal Elementary School, Multipurpose Room, in Pojoaque. Hearings are open house style in format and begin at 6:30 p.m. Informational presentations and an oral comments period begins at 7 p.m.

Volunteer opportunities

1. The United Way of Santa Fe County is hard at work again planning the 28th annual July 4th event. This event is always a huge undertaking and United Way relies on the help of many volunteers to make it happen. United Way needs volunteers for a three-hour time slot to help them make this year's event successful. Volunteers will receive a 2003 T-shirt and a ticket for the breakfast.

Volunteer times on July 3 to setup: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m.
Volunteer times on July 4: 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., 9 a.m. to noon and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wellness Center class

The Wellness Center will be hosting Nuts, Berries and Trail Snacks from noon to 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday (June 3) at the Wellness Center. This class features easy-to-pack and energizing foods for walks and hikes, a snack tasting and a nutritional comparison of snack and energy bars. The class is free and open to all Laboratory employees, but pre-registration is required as the class size is limited.

Historical Society hosts McKibbin book-signing Friday

The Los Alamos Historical Society, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, will introduce "Gatekeeper to Los Alamos," a biography of Dorothy McKibbin, at a book-signing by the author from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday (June 6), at the Historical Museum Shop downtown.

The book tells the unique story of the woman who managed the Lab's office at 109 E. Palace Avenue in Santa Fe, acting as shock-absorber for all the men and women and their families who arrived for their mysterious assignment "up on the Hill."

The Museum Shop is located in the Historical Museum next door to Fuller Lodge on Central Avenue.

Family YMCA registering for July 4 Firecracker Run

The Los Alamos Family YMCA is accepting registrations for its annual July 4 Firecracker Run. The 5-kilometer run begins at 8:30 a.m. from the north end of the YMCA parking lot downtown.

Race check-in begins at 8 a.m. and there are several age group categories for men and women. There also will be prizes awarded to the top overall male and female finisher.

Race-day registration is from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. The cost to enter the run is $10 for the first member, $8 for a second family member and $6 for subsequent family members. But family members must register at the same time to qualify for the family discount, according to a news release from the Family YMCA.

The Los Alamos Family YMCA is located at 1450 Iris St.

Paving, other work to close parking lot at Diamond Drive and Pajarito Road

The temporary parking lot just west of the Diamond Drive and Pajarito Road intersection will be closed from June 2 through June 15 for paving, striping and installation of lighting.

Weather permitting, the parking lot should reopen on Monday, June 16.

Youth volleyball registration under way at Los Alamos YMCA

The Los Alamos Family YMCA is now registering youths for its Bumpers volleyball program. The six-week program is in session from June 16 to July 25. The Los Alamos Family YMCA is a Laboratory sanctioned organization.

The program is for girls and boys between ages 4 and 7 and registration continues through June 11. The cost is $25 for YMCA members; $35 for nonmembers.

The Los Alamos Family YMCA is located at 1450 Iris St. downtown.

Radiochemistry conference July 13-16 in Carlsbad

The 2003 Radiochemistry Conference, sponsored by the Radiochemistry Society, will be held July 13-16, 2003 in Carlsbad. The conference includes a one day technical workshop, "Education in radiochemistry: an academic and a public problem," on July 14. Technical sessions are scheduled the following two days.

Participants are encouraged to give oral or poster presentations. The abstract deadline is June 20.

Teams needed for Interdivisional Relay

Laboratory organizations can sign up for the Interdivisional Relay on June 11 at Sullivan Field at Los Alamos High School.

There is no cost to participate in the event, which begins at noon. Teams should consist of 10 members, according to Ron Kirkpatrick of Thermonuclear Applications (X-2). Teams will run in a 4,000-meter relay that consists of two, 800-meter legs, four, 400-meter legs and four, 200-meter legs. The legs are in this order: 800,400, 400, 200, 200, 200, 200, 400, 400, 800.

Kirkpatrick said teams also should have at least two timers. Depending on the number of team entries, two heats may be run. Alternates for teams are encouraged, he added.

Scoring is based on the single-age records for men and women and teams should have a list of its runners in the order in which they will run, as well as the signed PAR-Q form, which is required by the Wellness Center (HSR-2).

Project management workshop scheduled for July

Doing projects succesfully and delivering results on time and within budget is [one of] the most effective tool for obtaining future funding. On July 8-10, the Leadership Center in Training and Development (HR-TD) is hosting a workshop focusing on individual skill building and the essential elements of project management. These include:

• Building high performing teams;
• Establishing project definitions that are clear and realistic;
• Understanding the detailed steps in project planning;
• Optimizing trade-offs;
• Developing a baseline plan and monitoring procedures;
• Tracking progress and fixing problems;
• Closing out a project.

The course is customized for the Laboratory and presented by Erika Jones and Associates. The workshop also will include case studies for participants.

Basic Records and Information Management class on June 9

In response to the recent issuance of LIR-308-00-02.0, Laboratory Records Management, the Information and Records Management group is offering a half day course on Basic Records and Information Management (Course # 22477) from 8:30 a.m. to noon on June 9 at Canyon School, Room 172. Other course dates will be scheduled as needed.

This course will be presented in five short modules: Overview of Records Management and What is a Record; Records Management Drivers; What Is an Office of Record; What Are Retention Schedules; and Records Disposition--Transfer and Destruction. The course will provide interested employees with the basic tools needed to continue to implement this LIR and to answer questions regarding its requirements.

There is no cost for this course and registration can be done through Virtual Training on the Lab's home page. Certificates will be awarded to those who complete the course and refreshments will be provided.

Soccer camp registration underway at Los Alamos Family YMCA

Registration for the Los Alamos Family YMCA's UK International soccer camp is now underway. The camp is for children ages 4 to 11+ and is directed by professional soccer coaches from Britain. The camp is June 9 through 13 and costs $89 for a half-day (9 a.m. to noon) and $145 for the full day ( 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

The soccer camp takes place at Watanabe Field on Barranca Mesa.

"Marketing for Program Development" scheduled June 11-12

Training and Development (HR-TD) is conducting a marketing course June 11 and 12. The course addresses key marketing issues of budget trends; identifying opportunities; establishing credibility; finding champions; and reducing the risk of unexpected negative reactions from within the bureaucracy.

The workshop is designed to deal with the unique marketing environment, perspectives and politics of the government arena. The course provides a simple and efficient, step-by-step process to minimize the time and effort of developing proposals. Finally, there is a six-hour segment on creating winning marketing plans.

Plutonium Futures conference in July

The Plutonium Futures conference is July 6-10 at the Albuquerque Marriott Hotel. The conference addresses scientific and technical issues surrounding plutonium and other actinides and attempts to educate the public and students on these topics.

Registration costs $350 if received before June 5. After June 5, the cost is $450. For American Nuclear Society members, the cost is $300 for early registration and $400 after June 5.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
