Public hearings on proposed CMR Building replacement June 3-4

The National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Energy and Office of Los Alamos Site Operations are holding two public hearings next week regarding the proposed Chemistry Metallurgy Research (CMR) Building replacement project.

The hearings are open to the public, which can submit comments on the analyses of potential effects, and the attendant environmental issues that could result from the proposed CMR Building replacement project.

The public hearings are Tuesday (June 3) in Fuller Lodge on Central Avenue in Los Alamos and Wednesday (June 4) at the Pablo Roybal Elementary School, Multipurpose Room, in Pojoaque. Hearings are open house style in format and begin at 6:30 p.m. Informational presentations and an oral comments period begins at 7 p.m.

The following alternatives were selected for detailed environmental evaluation

  • Relocating analytical chemistry and material characterization capabilities from Technical Area 3 to new facilities in TA-55 near the existing Plutonium Facility;
  • Relocating CMR capabilities from TA-3 to new facilities built on undisturbed land in TA-6;
  • Retaining limited office functions at the existing CMR facility and moving analytical chemistry and materials characterization capabilities to new facilities at TA-55 or TA-6;
  • Continuing CMR mission activities at the current location and not constructing new facilities (no action alternative).

Comments, questions or requests can be submitted in writing through June 30 to Elizabeth Withers of OLASO at 528 35th Street, Los Alamos, N.M., 87544-2201 or write to emrreis@doeal.gov by electronic mail or by phone at 1-877-491-4957 or 667-9998 by fax.
