Thursday, May 29, 2003 Friday is deadline for Laboratory Foundation community outreach grantsFriday is the deadline to submit proposals for 2003 community outreach grants to the nonprofit Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation. Nonprofit educational institutions, IRS-qualified 501 (c)(3) organizations, government agencies, and pueblo communities serving Los Alamos, Mora, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Sandoval, Santa Fe and Taos counties are eligible to apply for community outreach grants from the foundation, said Nicolla Covey, a program officer for the foundation. Community outreach grants are designed to create strong partnerships with local schools and organizations making big differences in Northern New Mexico communities. The foundation emphasizes projects that meet a critical need in the community, strengthen public education, enhance community improvement and the delivery of social services and benefit a large number of people. Letters of intent where a foundation community outreach grant will provide the last dollars needed to complete a project also are encouraged. In 2003, the Laboratory Foundation will allocate $295,000 in community outreach grants. Covey said all eligible organizations interested in seeking a community outreach grant must submit a letter of intent not to exceed three pages, which includes a brief description of the need or problem to be addressed, a brief description of the project and intended goals, a project budget summary including an overall funding strategy, and a proposal summary report. The proposal summary report is available at the foundation's Web page at www.lanlfoundation.org online. Laboratory Foundation staff and a panel of community leaders will review applicant letters of intent and make recommendations to the foundation's Board of Directors. Organizations approved by the board will be invited to submit full application portfolios. The Laboratory Foundation is the not-for-profit philanthropic grant-giving entity for the Lab, supporting a range of national and community not-for-profit organizations. The foundation uses investment earnings from contributions to the foundation to grant funds for education, economic development and social programs in Northern New Mexico communities. Since 1997 when the Laboratory Foundation was created, nearly $10.6 million in grant funds have been awarded to 423 Northern New Mexico nonprofit, charitable organizations and government agencies meeting civic, cultural, economic development, education and social service needs. The Laboratory Foundation offices are located at 1850 Old Pecos Trail, Suite F, in Santa Fe.
