L.A.N.L. news to be distributed this weekThe current issue of the Los Alamos NewsLetter, dated the week of May 26, is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week. Interim Laboratory Director Pete Nanos has the confidence of University of California President Richard Atkinson as evidenced by Atkinson's intention to appoint Nanos as permanent Los Alamos director. The UC Board of Regents must okay this, but Atkinson notes, " ... which they will do at the earliest possible date." The story is this issue's Page 1 news. The ranks of the best and brightest have been augmented by the most recent round of distinguished postdoctoral appointments. Page 1 has this story, and on Page 4 read about former postdocs and what they have have been up to since their appointments. In case you missed it earlier, Page 2 has the write up on National Nuclear Security Administration Administrator Linton Brooks' visit to the Lab to discuss competing the Department of Energy contract to manage the Lab. Brooks stood for myriad questions. Also during this all-employee meeting, the team responsible for Qual-1 was recognized with the NNSA Bronze Award. Security has been increased and part of the effort includes a small corps of explosives- and drug-detecting dogs and their handlers. Page 5 has the story. Safety and Security Day is June 26 downtown. The reminder also is on Page 5. Contact Fran Talley of the Public Affairs Office at 7-5225 for more information. The Lab and its people continue to garner awards. Page 6 has an article on the national Minority Small Business Advocate of the Year - Steve Mee, program manager of the Lab's Cerro Grande Rehabilitation Project Office (FWO-CGRP). Also of note: "Sustainable Design Guide," a book by Project Planning (PM-1) that details guidelines for designers and builders, was judged winner in the Outstanding Sustainable Planning or Design Project category of the 2003 competition sponsored by the American Planning Association's Federal Planning Division. In addition, John Bretzke has been named the new deputy division leader for project management in the Spallation Neutron (SNS) Project and UC President Atkinson is the recipient of the National Science Foundation's 2003 Vannevar Bush Award. Read about these last two on Page 7, along with the service anniversaries of current Lab employees. Nostalgia is the theme of the "Stiner Diner" in this issue's Spotlight piece. Read about refurbished jukeboxes, the basement diner and longed-for gas pumps set at 22.9 cents a gallon. Employees can access the Los Alamos NewsLetter at http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/news/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so.
