Wednesday, May 21, 2003 Fire restrictions in effect this week in Santa Fe National ForestStage one fire restrictions go into effect today in the Santa Fe National Forest and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Camfires are limited to camp and picnic grounds where grills are provided and smoking is permitted only in vehicles, enclosed buildings or in developed campgrounds. Permits for campfires are not being issued at this time. The restrictions are being put in place before the Memorial Day weekend, traditionally one of the busiest weekends in terms of forest visitation. The restrictions are being implemented for public safety and extreme fire hazard conditions, according to Gilbert Zepeda, acting forest supervisor for the Santa Fe National Forest. Several areas with Santa Fe National Forest are exempted from the restrictions: The Pecos Wilderness, San Pedro Parks Wilderness and the Chama River Canyon Wilderness.
