Laboratory security condition upgraded to SECON 2

The Laboratory has upgraded its security condition to SECON 2 at the direction of the Department of Energy. This upgrade is consistent with the national terrorist threat level, which was upgraded Tuesday to orange, or "high risk of terrorist attack."

"This move to SECON 2 is in response to the national threat upgrade," Interim Laboratory Director Pete Nanos said Tuesday. "It is not in response to any specific threat against the Laboratory."

Laboratory management continues to closely monitor the security status of the Laboratory and will take reasonable and prudent precaution as required.

The Laboratory has implemented several actions to achieve SECON 2 by increasing security patrols and putting additional traffic controls on the Pajarito Road corridor as well as other less visible activities.

While at SECON 2, Pajarito Road corridor access will continue to be limited to badge holders only. One badge holder per vehicle will be required and that badge holder will be responsible for any other passengers in the vehicle. It is not known at this time how long the Laboratory will remain at SECON 2, but unless notified otherwise, all other activities at the Laboratory will proceed normally. Any further change in the security condition at the Laboratory will be conveyed to employees.

Lab workers who have security questions or concerns should contact their Organizational Safeguards and Security Officer (OSSO). He or she is the security point of contact for Laboratory organizations.
