Laboratory workers can walk their way to health and fitness by joining "Walk this Weigh," the Wellness Center's annual walking month program. Walking month at the Laboratory begins May 19 and continues through June 13. Registration begins Wednesday and can be completed at http://www.wellness.lanl.gov/ online. A
special walk on May 21, which is national Employee Health and Fitness
Day, will formally kick off Walking Month. The
walk dubbed "Walk this Weigh and Let's
Talk Trash," is a combination fitness and trash clean-up event sponsored
by the Wellness Center and Risk Reduction and Environmental Stewardship
(RRES) Division. Walkers will have the option of picking up trash and
will be provided with trash bags. Participants should plan on bringing

The 2003 Radiochemistry Conference, sponsored by the Radiochemistry Society, will be held July 13-16, 2003 in Carlsbad. The conference includes a one day technical workshop, "Education in radiochemistry: an academic and a public problem," on July 14. Technical sessions are scheduled the following two days. Participants are encouraged to give oral or poster presentations. The abstract deadline is June 20. Updated 5/20/03 Teams needed for Interdivisional Relay Laboratory organizations can sign up for the Interdivisional Relay on June 11 at Sullivan Field at Los Alamos High School. There is no cost to participate in the event, which begins at noon. Teams should consist of 10 members, according to Ron Kirkpatrick of Thermonuclear Applications (X-2). Teams will run in a 4,000-meter relay that consists of two, 800-meter legs, four, 400-meter legs and four, 200-meter legs. The legs are in this order: 800,400, 400, 200, 200, 200, 200, 400, 400, 800. Kirkpatrick said teams also should have at least two timers. Depending on the number of team entries, two heats may be run. Alternates for teams are encouraged, he added. Scoring is based on the single-age records for men and women and teams should have a list of its runners in the order in which they will run, as well as the signed PAR-Q form, which is required by the Wellness Center (HSR-2). YMCA staff will discuss this year's summer camp, including specifics on planned activities, the structure of the camp, field trips and solicit input from interested parents. Schedules for the first week of the camp also will be available for parents. Summer camp is scheduled to begin June 2. The Los Alamos Family YMCA is located at 1450 Iris St. downtown. Updated 5/15/03 Basic Records and Information Management class on June 9 In response to the recent issuance of LIR-308-00-02.0, Laboratory Records Management, the Information and Records Management group is offering a half day course on Basic Records and Information Management (Course # 22477) from 8:30 a.m. to noon on June 9 at Canyon School, Room 172. Other course dates will be scheduled as needed. This course will be presented in five short modules: Overview of Records Management and What is a Record; Records Management Drivers; What Is an Office of Record; What Are Retention Schedules; and Records Disposition--Transfer and Destruction. The course will provide interested employees with the basic tools needed to continue to implement this LIR and to answer questions regarding its requirements. There is no cost for this course and registration can be done through Virtual Training on the Lab's home page. The camp is for children ages 4 to 11+ and is directed by professional soccer coaches from Britain. The camp is June 9 through 13 and costs $89 for a half-day (9 a.m. to noon) and $145 for the full day ( 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.). The soccer camp takes place at Watanabe Field on Barranca Mesa. These sessions are the same sessions offered last fiscal year and are meant for those POCs who did not take the prior training. The Mandatory Training (No. 24182) will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. This session concentrates on the POC responsibilities as listed in LIR 308-00-02.0, Laboratory Records Management, and is a mandatory requirement for all POCs. The Expanded POC Training (No. 24212) will be held from 9:45 a.m. to noon. This session will expand into some records management topics and is not mandatory. The course addresses key marketing issues of budget trends; identifying opportunities; establishing credibility; finding champions; and reducing the risk of unexpected negative reactions from within the bureaucracy. The workshop is designed to deal with the unique marketing environment, perspectives and politics of the government arena. The course provides a simple and efficient, step-by-step process to minimize the time and effort of developing proposals. Finally, there is a six-hour segment on creating winning marketing plans. Updated 1/9/03 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.
