May Body Bulletin and online Personal Best newsletters now available

The May issue of the Body Bulletin newsletter is being distributed to Laboratory employee mail stops and Personal Best is available at http://int.lanl.gov/worklife/health/phd/May03PB/index.html online.

Although both newsletters contain the same information, additional or expanded articles are included in the online Personal Best issue.

National Employee Health and Fitness Day is May 21. The lead article in this month's newsletter, "Play Around," is a good reminder that exercise should be fun and can be playful. To celebrate the occasion, the Wellness Center (HSR-2) is kicking off the Lab's Walking Month program, "Walk this Weigh," at noon that day with a trail hike starting at the Wellness Center track.

Consistent physical activity like walking is an important component of weight management. The other component is good nutrition. The article, "Fats, Carbs or Calories?," reviews healthy eating practices for weight loss and comments on two popular approaches, the Atkins diet and the Ornish plan.

May is Mental Health Month. Learn how to perform progressive relaxation and a brief meditation from the article, "Try to Relax." In addition, self-help tips are provided on how to alleviate discouraging thoughts and feelings.

The recipe of the month is avocado spring salad.

Also in this issue: safety in the backyard, caring for teenagers, preventive tips for seasonal allergies and the wall test for good posture.

Body Bulletin and online Personal Best are published by Scott Publishing in Edmonds, Wash., and are part of the Lab's Positive Health Directions program in Occupational Medicine (HSR-2) and Benefits and Employment Services (HR-B).
