National Day of Prayer event is Thursday

An event to mark National Day of Prayer begins at 11 a.m. Thursday on the north terrace of the Otowi Building cafeteria at Technical Area 3. In One Accord Ministries sponsors the free event.

National Day of Prayer was declared by President Reagan. The event has been Laboratory sanctioned.

Wellness Center offers walking class

Get ready for summer and the Wellness Center's "Walk this Weigh" program that starts May 19.

Walking Works for Fitness (class #2488) will be held from 5:50 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday's and Thursday's (April 29 - May 22), at the Wellness Center. This class is designed to help walkers incorporate techniques to maximize the effectiveness of their walks. There is no charge for the class and participants are welcome to attend all or just a few of the sessions.

Laboratory Records Management classes

Basic Records and Information Management Class, Course # 22477 - In response to the recent issuance of LIR-308-00-02.0, Laboratory Records Management, the Information and Records Management (IM-5) is offering a half day course on Basic Records and Information Management from 8:30 a.m. to noon on May 15. The course is at Canyon School, Room 172. Other course dates will be scheduled as needed.

This course will be presented in five short modules: Overview of Records Management and What is a Record; Records Management Drivers; What Is an Office of Record; What Are Retention Schedules; and Records Disposition -- Transfer and Destruction. The course will provide interested employees with the basic tools needed to continue to implement this LIR and to answer questions regarding its requirements.

Two sessions for Laboratory Records Management Point of Contacts are on May 22 at Canyon School, Room 172. These sessions are the same sessions offered last fiscal year and are meant for those POCs who did not take the prior training. The Mandatory Training (No. 24182) will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. This session concentrates on the POC responsibilities as listed in LIR 308-00-02.0, Laboratory Records Management, and is a mandatory requirement for all POCs. The Expanded POC Training (No. 24212) will be held from 9:45 a.m. to noon. This session will expand into some records management topics and is not mandatory.

There is no cost for these sessions and registration can be done through Virtual Training on the Lab's home page. The sessions will provide interested employees with the basic tools needed to continue to implement this LIR and answers to questions regarding its requirements.

"Marketing for Program Development" scheduled June 11-12

Training and Development (HR-TD) is conducting a marketing course June 11 and 12. The course addresses key marketing issues of budget trends; identifying opportunities; establishing credibility; finding champions; and reducing the risk of unexpected negative reactions from within the bureaucracy.

The workshop is designed to deal with the unique marketing environment, perspectives and politics of the government arena. The course provides a simple and efficient, step-by-step process to minimize the time and effort of developing proposals. Finally, there is a six-hour segment on creating winning marketing plans.

FLIR Systems open house is today

FLIR Systems will be holding an open house from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today (April 30) at the Los Alamos Inn. On display will be equipment used for research and development as well as systems and software used in Predictive and Preventative Maintenance applications. FLIR's open house provides an excellent venue to keep current with the latest in IR camera advancements and application trends.

Sangre de Cristo Chorale closes its 25th concert season with Spinning Silver into Gold

The 40-voice Sangre de Cristo Chorale, under the direction of Sheldon Kalberg and accompanied by Cindy Little, will close its t25th anniversary concert season with Spinning Silver into Gold. These concerts will present classic masterpieces and favorites, including works by Duruflé, Bach, Busto and others, and featuring Maurice Duruflé's Requiem with organ, harp and cello. The concerts will also feature Randall Thompson's Frostiana, six pieces that showcase the celebrated poetry of Robert Frost.

The performances are at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 3, at the United Church in Los Alamos and at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 4 at the Saint Francis Auditorium in Santa Fe.

Tickets are available at $15 for regular admission and $10 for senior citizens and will be available at the door. Advance tickets will also be available at Brownell's in Los Alamos and at Joni's Hallmark Shop and Nicholas Potter Bookseller in Santa Fe.

Project Management Overview course May 6 at Canyon School complex

A one-day project management orientation for Lab workers who supervise project managers or project team members, and for those who sponsor and fund projects is scheduled for May 6 at the Canyon School complex. Participants will learn about the processes and necessary sequence of events that lead to successful projects. They also will learn effective methods for communicating about project status, problems, and adjustments to project schedules, scope and budgets.

Family YMCA registering children from afternoon adventures, summer camp programs

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is now registering children from its Afternoon Adventures and Summer Camp 2003 programs.

Registration begins April 7 and ends May 2. During this time period only, the Family YMCA will waive the regular registration fee for the programs. After this time period, the $25 registration fee is in effect.

The Afternoon Adventures program provides children a fun, safe, supervised environment for activities. It is offered at every elementary school in Los Alamos and White Rock.

Summer Camp 2003 is from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at Aspen Elementary School, beginning June 2 and ending Aug. 27. Camp includes two snacks per day, field trips, guest speakers, arts and crafts, hiking, swimming, indoor rock climbing and other activities.

YMCA bench press contest registration underway

The Los Alamos Family YMCA is now registering contestants for its 13th annual bench press contest on May 3.

Ribbons will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers in male and female weight and age categories. Trophies also will be awarded to the top male and female lifters. The cost to enter is $10 for YMCA members, $14 for nonmembers. The first 40 people to sign up will receive a official bench press contest T-shirt.

The Los Alamos Family YMCA is a Laboratory sanctioned organization. It is located at 1450 Iris St. downtown.

Los Alamos Relay For Life is May 16-17

The American Cancer Society will host the seventh annual Relay For Life at Ashley Pond on May 16 and 17. Relay for Life celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those who have lost their battle with cancer, is a way for everyone to fight back against cancer and is a celebration of life.

The event starts at 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, with a Survivors' Lap followed by the Angels' Lap for family and care givers. The Luminaria ceremony is scheduled for 9 p.m. The music, contests and entertainment will continue throughout the night and will end at noon on Saturday, May 17. Cancer survivors are invited to a Survivors' Reception.

Plutonium Futures conference in July

The Plutonium Futures conference is July 6-10 at the Albuquerque Marriott Hotel. The conference addresses scientific and technical issues surrounding plutonium and other actinides and attempts to educate the public and students on these topics.

Registration costs $350 if received before June 5. After June 5, the cost is $450. For American Nuclear Society members, the cost is $300 for early registration and $400 after June 5.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.

Found: Kwikset key (appears to be a house key) at edge of parking lot next to EES-11, TA-3, Bldg. 467, in the vicinity of the Physics Auditorium. There are no markings on the key. Call the S-10 Group office at 5-5237 to claim.

Found: keys on March 17 in TA-3 north-east parking lot (east of Diamond Drive); two keys on a key ring, one for a Toyota car. Claim at the Badge Office.

Found: prescription glasses in case in parking lot at Central Park Square. To claim, contact Kim at 7-7000.

Lost: gold link bracelet with about 7 links. Each link is about 1" in length and has been engraved with a name or initials (Dott, CP, etc.). Bracelet has deep sentimental value. If found, please call Pam at 7-2537 or write to ppoo@lanl.gov by electronic mail.
