University of California Laboratory employees and their families are eligible for the program, which is designed to offer protection from the potentially devastating cost of long-term care.
Long-term care is the extended care needed to perform activities of daily living like bathing, dressing or eating caused by accidents, chronic conditions or frailty of old age.
A spouse, adult siblings, parents and parents-in-law of Laboratory employees are eligible to apply for the program even if the employee chooses not to apply. It is one of the most comprehensive and affordable programs available as well as the most successful program of its kind, according to Jeanne Schafer of the CalPERS Office of Long-Term Care.
Long-term care coverage provides independence, choice, financial protection and the peace of mind that, if the coverage is needed, care options are available. It also lets the coverage holder preserve assets for other uses, said Schafer.
Schafer said costs for the long-term care coverage costs are lower the younger a person is.
