March Body Bulletin and online Personal Best newsletters now available

The March issue of the Body Bulletin newsletter is being distributed to Laboratory employee mail stops and Personal Best is available at http://int.lanl.gov/worklife/health/phd/March03PB/index.html online.

Although both newsletters contain the same information, additional or expanded articles are included in the Personal Best online version.

March is National Nutrition Month. This month readers will find a summary of the key points from a Dietary Intake Report released last fall. The new guidelines were developed from the results of a major nutrition study conducted by several health agencies in the United States and Canada.

"If you're happy and you know it clap your hands." Happiness has been extensively studied and linked to good health and longevity. Unfortunately, surveys have shown that as a nation U.S. citizens are less happy and more depressed now than 50 years ago. Discover how to find lasting happiness in this month's article "High on Happiness."

Stress can be significant cause of lost happiness. Visiting nature can be a way to regain focus and peace of mind. Read more in "Take a Nature Break."

Another way stress can be relieved is though biofeedback. To learn more, call the Laboratory's Employee Assistance Program in Occupational Medicine (HSR-2) for a free demonstration of biofeedback equipment, or attend the free health promotion class, "Introduction to Biofeedback" from noon to 1 p.m. on March 18. Call the Wellness Center at 7-7166 for more information.

"Low back pain keeps up to 5 percent of the U.S. work force off the job every day." The good news is that most back pain doesn't have a serious, underlying cause and will resolve itself though self-care. Readers will find the self-care recommendations of doctors and physical therapists on easing back pain in the article "Coping with Back Pain."

The recipe of the month is Hot Potato Soup.

Also in this month's issues: dental health, swing shift safety, the risks of secondhand smoke, medication tips, household toxins and hearing aid devices.

Body Bulletin and online Personal Best are published by Scott Publishing in Edmonds, Wash., and are part of the Lab's Positive Health Directions program in HSR-2 and Benefits and Employment Services (HR-B).
