Women's Diversity Working Group seeking input, past members

Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Women's Diversity Working Group or any of its predecessor women's organization at the Laboratory? The WDWG is looking for past members as it has begun planning events and activities for Women's History Month in March. One idea contemplated is recognizing the women at the Laboratory who have participated in the WDWG through the years. A reunion of past and present WDWG members is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., March 11, in Fuller Lodge downtown.

At the reunion, Interim Laboratory Director Pete Nanos is scheduled to unveil the "Women: Pioneering the Future" poster, which is the theme of this year's national Women's History Month observance.

Bowl for Kids Sake bowlathon Sunday benefits Lunch Buddies, Big Brothers Big Sisters programs

The Lunch Buddies and Big Brothers Big Sisters bowlathon is Sunday, March 2, at Santa Clara Big Rock Bowl in Espanola. The Lunch Buddies and Big Brothers Big Sisters programs are Laboratory sanctioned organizations.

Participants raise money by soliciting pledges from sponsors. Big Brothers Big Sisters invoices those individuals and/or organizations who make pledges and proceeds are used to match children with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

New JIT for Hewlett Packard printers, scanners and related accessories

Beginning Monday (Feb. 24), Networx, Inc. will provide a Just-In-Time service to the Laboratory for HP printers, scanners and related accessories. Networx has offices in Española and Albuquerque, and will provide daily deliveries to the Lab. Networx, a small, minority owned, 8(a) firm will offer very low pricing through a Department of Energy Complex-wide pricing agreement, and will provide on-site warranty repair services. Los Alamos Little Theatre presents two one-act plays

In March, the Los Alamos Little Theatre is presenting two one-act plays written and directed by local playwright Corey Steven New: Dweller in the Ravine: a love story and My Better Half. Dweller was first produced at San Juan College in Farmington, N.M. and won the San Juan National Playwriting Competition. My Better Half, a romantic comedy, is making its feature debut at LALT.

Showtimes: March 7, 8, 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 8:15 p.m.  Tickets are available at Bownell's Hallmark and at the door.

Wellness Center classes

"Snacks that Work at Work" is a 30-minute class designed especially for Food to Work By program participants. (See Newsbulletin article http://www.lanl.gov/orgs/pa/newsbulletin/2003/02/20/text07.shtml.) If your idea of a work snack is a trip to the vending machine, it's time for some quick and healthy alternatives that will keep you energized throughout your workday. Demonstration of a 'work pantry' is included. Noon to 12:30 p.m., March 4. No fee, but pre-registration is required.

Metabolic Rate Revealed - That elusive metabolic rage - calories burned - can now be individually measured and better understood for weight management, fitness goals and more. Includes interpretation of Resting Metabolic Rate using indirect calorimetry equipment, along with diet and exercise techniques that boost metabolic rate. Noon to 1 p.m., March 5. Registration by Jan. 23 is required for completing metabolic test prior to class. Fee: $18, to cover the cost of the individual testing equipment.

Mesa Public Library to host Los Alamos Public Schools' annual 'All-School Art Show'

The Los Alamos Public Schools’ annual "All-School Art Show" will take place at the Mesa Public Library Art Gallery and Main Level during the month of March. The show will feature the artwork of the Los Alamos Public Schools elementary, middle and high school students. The show may be viewed during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Master Gardener classes to begin in March

New Mexico State University is currently enrolling students for the Master Gardener training course, which begins March 12 and runs through the end of May. Topics include interfacing with wildlife, water efficient landscaping, soils, integrated pest management, backyard fruit and vegetable gardening, composting, turf and several other topics. The 45 hour course of instruction is designed to train individuals as Master Gardener volunteers. There are two payment options depending on volunteer commitment.

Oak Ridge lab hosting 2004 conference on facility operations

Oak Ridge National Laboratory will soon be accepting papers for the seventh International Conference on Facility Operations - Safeguards Interface. The conference is Feb. 29 through March 4, 2004 in Charleston, S.C.

The conference is co-sponsored by the American Nuclear Society--Isotopes and Radiation Division, Fuel Cycle and Waste Management Division, the President's Special Committee on Nonproliferation, and Savannah River's Local Section and the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management, Central Region Chapter.

Volunteer opportunities

• Volunteers needed to held with W.H.O. Program. If you have a desire to help children in our community and have a few hours to give of your time to help facilitate a nationally recognized video based program, we need you. The W.H.O. program, We Help Ourselves, is an age appropriate program that teaches children how to protect themselves in potentially dangerous, hurtful or frightening situations. Family Strengths Network works with the school district by training facilitators and finding volunteers to go into the classrooms and present this program to elementary and middle school age students. A training is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m., Feb. 27 at the Family Resource Center, 1990 Diamond Drive. • The 47th Northeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held on the New Mexico Highlands University campus on March 1. NMHU needs volunteer to serve as judges at this annual fair. A continental breakfast will be served from 8 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be provided. At 8:30 a.m., judges meet with their "Lead Judge." Project judging will begin at 9 a.m. Final judging should be completed before 3:30 p.m. Experienced judges are invited to serve on the "Best of Show" committee for life or physical sciences which may require an extra hour of your time following the category judging. • The 2003 New Mexico High School Science Bowl will be held on March 1 at the Albuquerque Academy. Sandia National Labs, Lockheed Martin, the Albuquerque Academy and other local companies will be sponsoring the event this year. The Science Bowl is a round robin / double elimination tournament for New Mexico high school science students. Up to 60 teams from New Mexico high schools will compete to represent the state at the National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. Moderators and officials are needed to conduct the competitions. Moderators read the questions while officials keep time, interpret the rules and keep the score. The competition will start at 8 a.m. and end in the afternoon. Snacks and lunch provided. An optional training session will be held in Feb. at Sandia Labs for those who are unfamiliar with the competition or for those wanting a refresher. Please contact Patrick Milligan at 844-5150 if you have any questions or would like to volunteer.

Elevator in Otowi Building out of service

The Otowi Building at Technical Area 3 will be without elevator service for up to six weeks because of mechanical failure. Repairs have begun on the elevator.

Facility management personnel in the Otowi Building will work with groups in the building to develop accommodations for all occupants during this period. Lab personnel who don't work in the Otowi Building but use the building for official business, to dine in the cafeteria and other matters are asked to remain cognizant of this situation and plan accordingly.

Individuals who are handicapped can access the Otowi Building's third floor through the west side entrance, while access to the middle floor is available through the east side entrance. The basement level isn't accessible to mobility impaired individuals, however, such individuals can write to otowi@lanl.gov by electronic mail and facility management personnel will attempt to accommodate them.

Clearance Processing has new electronic address for questions

Clearance Processing (S-6) has a new electronic address to assist with questions on clearance processing. The address is Clearan@lanl.gov. The e-mail should be used to ask about clearance processing status, for questions about completing the QNSP, for processing questions, etc. The address will be monitored daily and responses will be sent the same day unless further research is required. This replaces telephone calls made to 7-7253, although the phone number will continue to be monitored as well. The new address allows all clearance processing personnel to monitor and respond to questions rather than limiting responses to one person. Inquiries should not be duplicated by sending both a telephone and electronic mail message.

Project Management Toolbox scheduled for March 11-13

This three-day workshop focuses on individual skill building and addresses the essential elements of project management:

• building high performing teams
• establishing project definitions that are clear and realistic
• understanding the detailed steps in project planning
• optimizing trade-offs
• developing a baseline plan and monitoring procedures
• tracking progress and fixing problems
• closing out the project
  

Learning is reinforced by application case studies throughout the workshop. The course is customized for Los Alamos and presented by Erika Jones and Associates, who have a history of successful project facilitations throughout the Laboratory. Program Development: Marketing workshop scheduled for March 19-20

This workshop is designed to deal with the unique marketing environment, perspectives and politics of the government arena. This two-day session addresses key marketing issues: budget trends, identifying opportunities, establishing credibility, finding champions and reducing the risk of unexpected negative reactions from within the bureaucracy.

The course provides a simple and efficient, step-by-step process to minimize the time and effort of developing proposals. There is a six-hour segment on creating winning marketing plans.

Laboratory Records Management sessions on March 4

Two sessions for Laboratory Records Management point of contacts have been set for March 4 at Canyon School, Room 172. These sessions are the same sessions offered last fiscal year and are meant for those POCs who did not take the prior training.

The mandatory training will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. This session concentrates on the POC responsibilities as listed in LIR 308-00-02.0, Laboratory Records Management and is a mandatory requirement for all POCs.

The Expanded POC training will be held from 9:45 a.m. to noon. This session will cover topics presented in the Basic Records Management course being offered on Feb. 26 and is not mandatory.

There is no cost for these sessions and registration can be done through Virtual Training on the Lab's home page. The sessions will provide interested employees with the basic tools needed to continue to implement this LIR and answers to questions regarding its requirements. Plutonium Futures conference in July

The Plutonium Futures conference is July 6-10 at the Albuquerque Marriott Hotel. The conference addresses scientific and technical issues surrounding plutonium and other actinides and attempts to educate the public and students on these topics.

Registration costs $350 if received before June 5. After June 5, the cost is $450. For American Nuclear Society members, the cost is $300 for early registration and $400 after June 5.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://www.lanl.gov/internal/training/training.html one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
