Friday, February 21, 2003 Biological terrorism subject of Directors Colloquium TuesdayBiological terrorism and the new challenges of nonproliferation is the subject of a Director's Colloquium at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday in the Physics Building Auditorium at Technical Area 3. Christopher Chyba, co-director for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University, will present the lecture. He also is an associate professor at Stanford's Geological and Environmental Sciences Department. "Unfortunately, one need not look very far ahead to foresee a world in which biotechnology places increasing power in the hands of small groups of individuals," Chyba said. "Cold War bilateral arms control and nonproliferation regimes do not provide very good models to apply to these new challenges." Chyba earned a doctoral degree in astronomy at Cornell University in 1991. He also has a master's degree in philosophy and history from the University of Cambridge in England, as well bachelor's degrees in mathematics and physics from Cambridge and Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. The colloquium will be broadcast on LABNET Channel 9 and also can be viewed on desktop computers through the Internet using Real Media Live software.
