Prescribed burns start this week above Santa Fe watershed area

The Santa Fe National Forest plans a series of prescribed burns starting this week in the area above the Santa Fe watershed east of downtown. Weather permitting, some 250 piles of thinning slash created from fuel breaks and other thinning efforts will be burned.

The burns may last through the end of the month and will take place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. A prescribed burn crew of 20 people will be on-site to manage the burning and monitoring the piles, said Rick Miera, district ranger for the Santa Fe National Forest. "Thinning followed by burning will reduce the number of trees per acre, thus reducing the risk of high severity fire in the watershed," said Miera.

Smoke created from the prescribed burns will be visible in a wide area. Smoke monitors will be in place to ensure that air quality standards are not exceeded. People who are sensitive to smoke or have respiratory problems should take proper precautions including closing doors and windows.

For more information, call 438-7877 or 438-7840 or go to http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/sfe/ online.

Clearance Processing has new electronic address for questions

Clearance Processing (S-6) has a new electronic address to assist with questions on clearance processing. The address is Clearan@lanl.gov. The e-mail should be used to ask about clearance processing status, for questions about completing the QNSP, for processing questions, etc. The address will be monitored daily and responses will be sent the same day unless further research is required. This replaces telephone calls made to 7-7253, although the phone number will continue to be monitored as well. The new address allows all clearance processing personnel to monitor and respond to questions rather than limiting responses to one person. Inquiries should not be duplicated by sending both a telephone and electronic mail message.

For more information contact, Paula Dransfield of S-6 at 7-0662.
