Labs' Clark to speak Feb. 13 on "Issues Surrounding Plutonium"

David L. Clark of Nuclear Materials Technology (NMT-DO) and director of Los Alamos' Glenn T. Seaborg Institute for Transactinium Science will talk about "Issues Surrounding Plutonium" at 5 p.m., Feb. 13, in the University of New Mexico Education Conference Center, Room G, 1634 University Blvd., N.E. in Albuquerque.

Clark will describe some of the unique physical and chemical properties that make plutonium so unique. He will discuss some of the major issues surrounding plutonium, spanning its application in planetary and deep space exploration to reducing the nuclear danger surrounding weapons of mass destruction. Clark also will present the technical and policy options that are considered for responsibly dealing with the large plutonium inventory and their link to current events and the international treaties.

The talk is sponsored by the UNM Chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, and is co-sponsored by the Sigma Xi headquarters, and UNM's office of the vice presidents for Research, Health Sciences, School of Engineering, College of Pharmacy, Arts and Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Division of Continuing Education and the Albuquerque section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Los Alamos' Seaborg Institute, which is housed out of the Nuclear Materials Technology (NMT) Division Office at Technical Area 55, integrates research, education and training programs in actinide science. The Laboratory's institute is a branch of the Glenn T. Seaborg Institute of Transactinium Science at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. The Seaborg Institute is named after the late Glenn T. Seaborg, the distinguished scientist who among other things discovered plutonium, for which he won the Nobel Prize. The element Seaborgium was named in his honor.

Admission is free to the public and refreshments will be served at 4:30 p.m. For more information about the talk, call (505) 277-2941.
