Los Alamos NewsLetter to be distributed this week

The current issue of the Los Alamos NewsLetter is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week.

Good news covers both the front and back pages of this issue.

The new Senior Laboratory Fellows are Greg Canavan of the Physics (P) Division, Hans Frauenfelder of the Center for Nonlinear studies (T-CNLS) and Geoffrey West of Elementary Particles and Field Theory (T-8). The three, selected by former Laboratory Director John Browne, were chosen for their high level of excellence in programs important to the Lab's mission; or for making important scientific discoveries that lead to widespread use; or for being recognized as leaders in their fields, both within and outside the Lab.

Winners of the Laboratory Fellows Prize for 2002 are Carole Burns of Chemistry (C) Division, Robert Hixson of High Explosives Science (DX-2) and Roman Movshovich of Condensed Matter and Thermal Physics (MST-10). The announcement of their accomplishments is found on the back cover of this issue.

Between the covers, is an article on the January all-hands meeting where Interim Laboratory Director Pete Nanos was introduced to employees, a University of California announcement making Bruce Darling interim vice president for Laboratory management replacing John McTague and a change in the Internal Revenue Service mileage rates that caused the change in Lab rates.

Highlighted in this issue is the Dynamic Experimentation (DX) Division's reorganization with profiles of the new managers. Included too are Laboratory employees who recently have been given awards or honors and the service anniversaries for January.

Employees can access the Los Alamos NewsLetter at http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/news/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so.
